As a result, alongside several consortium partners; Balfour Beatty have been selected by bp (British Petroleum) to construct a first-of-a-kind fully integrated gas-fired power station with carbon capture and storage which is a key driving force behind plans to make Teesside the UK’s first decarbonised industrial cluster.

Balfour Beatty is seeking a dynamic Rigging and Lifting Supervisor to contribute to our Net Zero Teesside (NZT) project based at our site in Redcar and Cleveland.

Role Purpose

To supervise, coordinate and assure all lifting and rigging activities undertaken by Balfour Beatty and its sub-contractors, ensuring full compliance with Balfour Beatty procedures, Safe Systems of Work (SSOW), relevant legislation, and NZT project lifting standards.

The Lifting/Rigging Supervisor is responsible for the safe execution of lifting operations on their allocated shift, providing clear direction, oversight and leadership to lifting teams. This includes ensuring all activities are planned, risk assessed and delivered in line with LOLER and BS7121 requirements.

The role is predominantly site-based, with a strong focus on visible leadership, real-time decision making, and intervention where required to maintain safety and compliance standards

What you'll be doing

  • Brief lifting/rigging teams on approved lift plans, ensuring all personnel are signed onto the relevant documentation prior to works commencing
  • Ensure Balfour Beatty NZT lifting procedures are consistently applied by all lifting teams and subcontractors
  • Confirm all lifting operations are covered by a valid Permit to Lift before any activity begins
  • Supervise lifting activities on shift, ensuring compliance with SSOW, LOLER, BS7121 and project standards
  • Coordinate with rigging supervisors, lift supervisors and crane coordinators to maintain safe and efficient operations on site
  • Identify changes in lifting operations and support the development of lift plan variations in line with Balfour Beatty Project Lifting Standards
  • Assist in the coordination of crane activities, particularly where multiple cranes are operating in close proximity
  • Promote and uphold Balfour Beatty Golden Rules through visible leadership on site
  • Ensure all lifting personnel carry out their duties in line with their appointed roles and responsibilities

Responsibilities

  • Complete shift reports, allocation sheets and relevant documentation accurately using standard systems (e.g. Word, Excel, Outlook)
  • Provide clear and concise handovers to the next shift, highlighting key risks, constraints and ongoing activities
  • Work collaboratively with HSE advisors, supervision and construction teams to ensure lifting activities are delivered safely and to plan
  • Deliver toolbox talks and task briefings for lifting operations as required
  • Support incident investigations and implementation of corrective actions relating to lifting activities
  • Monitor competency and behaviours on site, ensuring lifting teams operate in line with SSOW, LOLER and industry best practice
  • Undertake any additional lifting-related duties as directed by the Lifting Manager or Lifting Superintendent

Who we're looking for

  • Appointed Person qualified and certified (CPCS Blue card A61) with practical/theoretical knowledge of project requirements and legislation (mandatory)
  • Lift Supervisor qualified and certified (CPCS Blue card A62)
  • ECITB NVQ L3 Diploma in Engineering Construction Lifting or Appointed Person Moving Loads
  • SMSTS (Site Management Safety Training Scheme) (can be obtained once in post)
  • Understanding of relevant information including LOLER, PUWER, BS7121 and WAHR (mandatory)
  • Efficient in the use of Microsoft programmes word, excel and outlook (mandatory)
  • Be confident and able to deliver briefings on lifting operations to the lift team
  • Be confident and able to deliver coaching and mentoring to lifting team members on site
  • Be able to produce written shift reports on the progress of lifting operations

The lifting superintendent is also required to have demonstrable experience in one of the two areas below:

Heavy Lift & Transport Experience

  • SPMT movements
  • Rigging and operational knowledge of cranes over 500te including a working knowledge of rigging heavy cranes, set up and working with a ballast tray
  • Tandem lifting with crawler cranes
  • Specialist lifting systems for heavy lift (stand jacking, skating etc)

Rigging Operations

  • Rigging operations including fleeting/cross hauling
  • Jacking and skating
  • Working in complex environments to move and transfer mechanical component
