The Role
The firm
A leading UK law firm with a network of offices from the South Coast to Scotland, working together as one national team. An innovative practice and the first top 100 law firm to achieve “Gold Standard” Investors in People, our values and culture are not just words on our website but are the heartbeat of the firm. The lack of barriers between departments, a real lack of hierarchy, zero tolerance for arrogance and pomposity makes Shoosmiths a fantastic place to work.
The team
The Risk & Ethics Directorate (‘R&E’) is responsible for all areas of compliance and risk management for Shoosmiths including developing firmwide policies and procedures to ensure compliance with all legal and regulatory compliance requirements, and to promote best practice. The team is split between the Central Compliance Unit who are responsible for the onboarding of all clients/matters (including conflicts and AML), Risk Management, and Data Protection.
The role
An exciting opportunity has arisen to join an established and well-regarded risk & ethics team in the legal sector as Risk & Ethics Advisor.
R&E supports all our offices/practice areas and enjoys a position at the heart of the business. Our aim is to ensure that the firm meets all its regulatory and legislative objectives and to ensure risk management processes are embedded into the firm’s culture whilst championing the commercial needs of our business.
The Risk & Ethics Advisor will collaborate closely with the firm’s R&E team including the Head of Risk and the Head of Data Protection to embed a culture of professional practice and support the provision of advice on a wide range of legal, regulatory and ethical issues impacting the firm.
This role offers an opportunity to build and develop knowledge and skills throughout a broad range of risk and compliance topics. This role will have split responsibilities across risk and data protection.

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?
Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.
Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.
