River & Flood Risk Civil Engineer

Water & Flood Defence Engineer Roles – expanding WSP’s Sustainability Team

At WSP, we empower careers built on passion, curiosity, and impact. Join us as we shape ambitious projects across the UK—and beyond—with opportunities to cultivate expertise while working with a diverse, talented team.

Dedicated to driving meaningful change, our national Sustainable Water Management team seeks Engineers, Senior Engineers, and Principal Engineers specialising in water, drainage, and environmental engineering to strengthen our rivers and flood defence capabilities.

Based in Liverpool, Manchester, Leeds, or Sheffield, this role offers a chance to make a tangible difference by designing and delivering critical infrastructure that protects communities from flooding—a body of work that creates lasting legado.

About the Role

WSP is seeking civil or flood risk engineers with hands-on experience in hydraulic designs, flood defences, and river management to support our UK projects. We partner closely with clients such as:

  • The Environment Agency
  • Local Authorities
  • Other asset management organisations

Your work could span:

  • From concept to detailed design across highways, railways, properties, and water management
  • Collaborating with internal and external clients on major infrastructure schemes
  • Windham reporting, site inspections, and supervising construction

Lead ambitious projects that shape how we protect and manage water resources—while redefining what sustainability engineering can achieve.

Key Responsibilities

We’re looking for experts with a proven track record in river and flood engineering who relish the challenge of delivering complex feasibility and design projects. Your responsibilities will include:

  • Designing and overseeing a diverse portfolio of flood protection schemes, including:
    • Hydraulic systems
    • Flood defences
    • Drainage infrastructure
    • Ancillary structures such as culverts, weirs, scour protection, gates, and outfalls
  • Leading technical advisory and business case development for flood risk projects
  • Collaborating internally and externally on integrated stormwater, highway, and rail designs
  • Refining engineering deliverables, specificants, and work programs for contractors
  • Conducting site inspections and construction supervision (either personally or as a lead)
  • Building strategic partnerships with local authorities, government agencies, and environmental regulators

Reasons to use Rodeo

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?

Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.

Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Start with a chat, not a search bar

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.
