River & Flood Risk Civil Engineer

Water, Drainage & Environmental Engineer – Rivers & Flood Defence (North England)

About the Role

WSP is seeking Engineers with expertise in Water, Drainage, and Environmental Engineering for rivers and flood defence projects to strengthen our technical capability and client capacity. Our primary contributors are the Environment Agency, Local Authorities, and asset management organisations across the UK. We deliver designs from concept to detailed execution, spanning multiple sectors.

As part of this role, you will be responsible for:

  • Delivering wide-ranging civil engineering river and flood-related schemes
  • Preparing and supporting business cases for protective works against flooding
  • Developing outline and detailed designs for flood projects, including:
    • Hydraulic systems
    • Flood defences
    • Drainage
    • Ancillary structures
  • Collaborating with infrastructure clients (internal and external) to design hydraulic structures, such as:
    • Culverts
    • Weirs
    • Walls
    • Outfalls
    • Scour protection (associated with highways, rail, and property projects)
  • Drafting work schedules and contractor specifications
  • Conducting asset inspections (above and below ground structures)
  • Supervising construction works (with support from colleagues where necessary)
  • Partnering with local authorities and environmental organisations

We’re looking for candidates at Engineer, Senior Engineer, and Principal Engineer levels within the north of England, based in our Liverpool, Manchester, Leeds, or Sheffield offices.

What We Look for in You

You’ll need to demonstrate:

  • A degree in civil or flood risk engineering
  • Post-degree experience in hydraulic designs related to river or flood defence work
  • Knowledge of flood and river diversion design principles
  • Proficiency in CAD or Civil 3D
  • Site experience, ideally in a supervision role
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Evidence of delivering projects to quality and commercial targets, while progressing towards:
    • Chारtered Engineer (CEng) or IncrouilleorEngineer (IEng) status

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead designs for flood mitigation and river infrastructure, ensuring alignment with project objectives
  • Work collaboratively with internal teams, clients, and contractors to deliver high-quality solutions
  • Conduct preliminary assessments, site investigations, and engineering feasibility studies
  • Manage project budgets, timelines, and client expectations effectively
  • Support technical training and career advancement within the team
