Civil & Flood Risk Engineering Role – Water, Drainage & Environmental Specialists
WSP | North of England Offices (Liverpool, Manchester, Leeds, Sheffield)
About the Role
What if you could shape a career as unique as you? At WSP, you can discover new challenges, expand your horizons, and thrive in a global, collaborative environment. We’re seeking Engineers, Senior Engineers, and Principal Engineers with expertise in Water, Drainage, and Environmental Engineering for rivers and flood defence projects—helping to grow our technical capability while supporting high-impact clients like the Environment Agency, Local Authorities, and asset management organisations.
This role spans the full design spectrum—from concept to detailed implementations—enabling you to work on diverse flood risk and infrastructure projects with real-world impact.
Key Responsibilities
- Deliver civil engineering and flood-related schemes, from initial concepts to final detailed designs for rivers, flood defences, hydraulic systems, and drainage.
- Develop, support, and present business cases for flood protection measures and asset management schemes.
- Design hydraulic structures and infrastructure-related elements such as culverts, weirs, flood walls, outfalls, and scour protection, collaborating with AWS (Asset Worldwide Solutions) teams or client teams across highways, rail, and property sectors.
- Create technical specifications and schedules for contractors, ensuring compliance with client expectations.
- Perform on-site asset inspections for both aboveground and belowground structures.
- Supervise construction works (where required), collaborating with cross-disciplinary teams and agency stakeholders.
- Engage with Local Authorities and environmental regulatory bodies to ensure sustainable, compliance-driven outcomes.
Location & Opportunities
Allocated to one of our northern offices (Liverpool, Manchester, Leeds, or Sheffield), this role invites you to contribute to nationally significant water management initiatives. As part of WSP’s Sustainable Water Management team, you’ll be a technical leader, driving proactive solutions for businesses and communities facing flood and river management challenges.

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?
Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.
Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.
