About the Role
WSP is seeking Engineers specialising in Water, Drainage & Environmental Engineering for rivers and flood defence projects. This role will strengthen our expertise and technical knowledge, ensuring a seamless support for UK-wide clients like the Environment Agency, Local Authorities, and other asset management organisations.
In this position, you’ll deliver:
- Civil Engineering Tasks: A variety of project schemes focused on rivers, floods and related tasks.
- Design & Business Cases: Preparing business cases for flood control works, developing outline and detailed designs for:
- Hydraulic systems & flood defences
- Drainage & ancillary structures
- Hydraulic structures (e.g., culverts, weirs, walls, outfalls, scour protection)
- Contractor Liaison: Creating work schedules and specifications for contractors.
- Site Inspection & Oversight:
- Above and below-ground structure inspection
- Supervision (assisted by peers) of construction works (responsibilities scale based on seniority)
- Collaboration: Working with clients over various engineering projects, including clients in highways, rail, and property sectors.

Locations – Primarily within the north of England, based in Liverpool, Manchester, Leeds, or Sheffield.
Your Contribution

Key Responsibilities
- Lead hydro-technical designs for flood risk reduction.
- Develop engineered standards & solutions based on live/pre-existing projects.
- Work across local & national partnerships to implement flood protection systems.
Who We’re Looking For
- Degree qualified in Civil, Flood Risk, or Civil Water Engineering.
- Post-degree experience in:
- Hydraulic designs (flood diversion, culvert/flood spillage modelling).
- Environmental & water engineering.
- Technical Skills:
- CAD & Civil 3D proficiency.
- Site supervision (or track record of contribution).
- Soft Skills :
- Excellent written + verbal communication.
- Demonstrable impact in project/Programme delivery, sticking to quality & commercial targets.
- Long-Term Aspiration: Pursuing Chartered or Incorporated Engineer status.
