River & Flood Risk Civil Engineer
Waters, Drainage & Environmental Engineers – Nuclear Innovation & New Build

At WSP, we are seeking Engineers with experience in Water, Drainage, and Environmental Engineering for rivers and flood defence projects. Join our Sustainable Water Management team in helping to shape the future of this role, sister team to Nuclear New Build designed to deliver focus on water and flood protection projects.
About the Role
WSP is expanding our expertise and technical capability with ** Engineers, Senior Engineers, and Principal Engineers** (primarily located in the north of England: Liverpool, Manchester, Leeds, or Sheffield) focused on delivering designs from concept to detailed designs across water and flood-related projects for clients including the Environment Agency, Local Authorities, and asset management organisations.
Your role will centre on concept through to detailed design implementation across various sectors, including:
- Delivering river and flood-related civil engineering schemes
- Preparing and supporting business cases for flood protection works
- Developing outline and detailed designs for flood defence projects, including:
- Hydraulic systems
- Flood defences
- Drainage systems
- Ancillary structures
- Designing hydraulic structures (culverts, weirs, walls, outfalls, scour protection) for highways, rail and property infrastructure projects
- Preparing work schedules, specifications, and detailed technical drawings for contractors
- Conducting asset inspections (surface-mounted and buried structures)
- Supervising construction activities (collaborating with support teams where needed)
- Collaborating with local authorities and national environmental organisations
You will become part of a proactive, responsible, and collaborative team, key to delivering high-profile, innovative, and lasting solutions.
Responsibilities
This role demands strong expertise in water and flood management alongside a proactive ethos to enhance WSP’s presence across river and drainage needs. Key responsibilities include:
- Leading a wide variety of civil engineering river and flood-related schemes, ensuring projects deliver concept to completion.
- Preparing comprehensive business cases promoting and integrating flood risk mitigation.
- Developing hydraulic system designs and detailed flood defence strategies, including all ancillary works.
- Collaborating with technical leads, clients and external stakeholders, lifting outputs into full project quality implementation.
- Supporting and drafting detailed work schedules and contractor specifications for efficiency and effectiveness.
- Contributing to asset inspection reports for structures above and below ground whilst supervising active construction.
- Actively working alongside policy makers, regulatory bodies, and partner organisations to align projects with climatic goals and environmental standards.

Requirements
Candidates must demonstrate the following qualifications and skills:
Education
- Degree qualified in civil or flood risk engineering.
Experience
- Minimum two+ years post-degree experience in hydraulic designs for river or flood defence projects.
- Hands-on practical site experience, especially in site supervision roles.
- Familiarity with flood diversion design principles and methodologies.
- Proficiency in CAD or Civil 3D design tools.
Technical and Leadership Skills
- Compelling communication skills (written and verbal).
- Certifiable expertise to contribute to successful project/programme delivery, meeting performance and commercial objectives.
- Proven project leadership to manage teams, quality and timelines.
Career Milestones
- Working towards or actively pursuing Chartered or Incorporated Engineer status.
