River & Flood Risk Civil Engineer

Water, Drainage & Flood Defence Engineer – WSP

About the Role

WSP is seeking Engineers with expertise in Water, Drainage and Environmental Engineering to advance our flood defence, river engineering, and sustainable water management capabilities. We work closely with clients such as the Environment Agency, Local Authorities, and asset management organisations across the UK. Our responsibilities range from government-backed projects to private sector developments, including:

  • Concept through to detailed design delivery for civil engineering, river flood-related schemes
  • Preparation of business cases for flood-defence works
  • Development of outline and detailed designs for flood projects, including hydraulic systems, flood defences, drainage, and ancillary structures
  • Collaboration with infrastructure clients (internal/external) on hydraulic structures like culverts, weirs, walls, outfalls, and scour protection
  • Development of construction contract specifications and schedules
  • Conducting asset inspections of above/below-ground infrastructure
  • Supervising construction works (supported by technical staff as needed)
  • Engaging with local and national environmental authorities

Eligible candidates include Engineers, Senior Engineers, and Principal Engineers based in the north of England, preferably for our Liverpool, Manchester, Leeds, or Sheffield offices.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead delivery of civil engineering river and flood project schemes
  • Compile business cases for protective flood work programmes
  • Design flood-defence systems from water hydraulics to downstream channel works
  • Work with infrastructure clients to design hydraulic features for highways, rail, and property projects
  • Prepare contractual specifications, schedules, and tender documentation
  • Perform asset inspections and technical assessments
  • Supervise construction, ensuring quality and compliance
  • Contribute to river management and restoration schemes

Key Requirements

Qualifications & Experience:

  • Degree-qualified in civil engineering or equivalent (e.g., flood risk management/environmental science)
  • Post-degree experience in hydraulic designs for rivers or flood defence works
  • Deep knowledge of flood/river engineering principles, including modelling, protection solutions, and technical solutions
  • Proficiency in CAD or Civil 3D design tools
  • On-site supervision experience, especially in construction/engineering projects
  • Track record of communication skills (written/verbal) and project delivery excellence
  • Contribution to meeting quality and commercial targets
