Rivers & Flood Risk Civil Engineer
Civil Engineers – Flood & Coastal Erosion Risk Management (FCERM)

About the Role
WSP is seeking Civil Engineers specialising in Flood & Coastal Erosion Risk Management (FCERM), focusing on optioneering, design development, and project/programme delivery to bolster our expertise and capabilities.
We provide consulting services to clients and projects across the UK, including:
- Environment Agency
- Network Rail
- Local Authority Highways Asset Teams
- Local Authority FCERM Programme Delivery
- Other asset management organisations
We deliver designs from concept to detailed execution across various sectors, with a preference for experience in:
- Scour assessments
- Scour mitigation design
- FCERM programme delivery (beneficial but not mandatory)
Key Responsibilities
You will be involved in:
- Origination and development of outline and detailed designs for flood projects, including scour assessments, flood defences, and coastal engineering.
- Leading technical assessments, optioneering, engineering appraisals, design from concept to completion across:
- Scour mitigation
- Coastal engineering
- River/flood-related projects
- Collaborating with infrastructure clients (internal and external) to design hydraulic structures:
- Culverts
- Weirs
- Walls
- Outfalls
- Scour protections (for highways, rail, and property projects)
- Preparing work schedules, technical specifications, and contractor briefs
- Conducting scour assessments and asset inspections of above/below-ground infrastructure
- Partnering with Network Rail, local authorities, and environmental client organisations

Requirements
Essential Criteria:
- Degree qualification in Civil Engineering, Hydraulic Engineering, or related field
- Post-degree experience in hydraulic design for river or flood defence projects
- Familiarity with design principles for flood/water momentum, detention works, culverts, and structural flood defenses
- Proficiency in CAD or Civil 3D (conceptual modelling, schematic design, survey)
- Site supervision experience—ideal but not mandatory
- Strong written and verbal communication skills
- Led projects/programmes that met quality, cost, and timing targets
- Working towards Chartered or Incorporated Engineer status (implying journey towards membership of a recognised engineering institution)
