Rivers & Flood Risk Civil Engineer
Civil Engineer – Flood & Coastal Erosion Risk Management (FCERM) Role
Location: Southwest England Grade: Senior Engineer (near Chartered) / Principal Engineer (Chartered)
About the Role
Help shape the future of sustainable water engineering! WSP is seeking talented Civil Engineers with experience in Flood & Coastal Erosion Risk Management (FCERM), designer-delivery, and programme/project management to strengthen our technical capability.
You’ll join a global team supporting key UK clients, including:
- Environment Agency
- Network Rail
- Local Authority Highways Asset Teams
- Local Authority FCERM Programmes
- Other asset management organisations
We deliver engineering solutions from concept through to detailed design across highways, rail, property, and environmental sectors.
Your expertise could enhance:
- Scour assessments & mitigation design
- Flood defences & coastal engineering
- Hydraulic structure designs (culverts, weirs, walls, scour protection, etc.)
- Collaboration with regulators (Network Rail, Environmental Agencies, councils)
The role is based in the southwest of England (UK-wide relocation may also be considered).
Key Responsibilities
- Design engineering flood solutions, including scour assessments, flood defences, and coastal protection.
- Lead appraisal, optioneering, outline, and detailed design for scour, coastal, river and flood-related schemes.
- Deliver technical execution from concept to completion across multiple infrastructure sectors.
- Develop work schedules, specifications and tender documentation for contractors.
- Conduct scour assessments and inspections of above/below-ground assets (structures, roads, bridges).
- Work with regulatory bodies, including Network Rail, Local Authorities and environmental organisations.

What We’re Looking For
Experience & Qualifications
- Degree qualified in Civil or Flood Risk Management Engineering.
- Postgraduate experience in hydraulic designs, particularly in river/flood defence works.
- Cross-functional hydraulic design knowledge for scour & flood diversions.
- CAD or Civil 3D experience (preferred but not compulsory).
- Site supervision or hands-on fieldwork experience (helper/technician level welcome).
Key Skills & Attributes
- Clear and effective written & verbal communication (technical reporting, stakeholder liaison).
- Demonstratable project/programme delivery expertise, ensuring quality and commercial success.
- Independent and collaborative leadership, driven by innovation.
- Chartership prospective candidates (working towards IG or CEng status preferred).
