Rivers & Flood Risk Civil Engineer
Civil Engineer opportunity – Flood & Coastal Erosion Risk Management (FCERM)

About the Role
WSP is seeking Civil Engineers with expertise in Flood & Coastal Erosion Risk Management (FCERM), including optioneering, design development, and projects/programme delivery, to contribute to our technical capability and growth.
As a key team member, you’ll support clients and projects across the UK, partnering particularly with:
- Environment Agency
- Network Rail
- Highways Asset Teams
- Local Authority FCERM Programme Delivery
- Asset management organisations
Duties include:
- Designing engineering flood projects, including scour assessments, scour solutions, and flood defences
- Delivering a variety of civil engineering assessments, appraisals, optioneering, and design schemes in related sectors
- Collaborating with infrastructure clients to design hydraulic structures (e.g., culverts, weirs, walls, outfalls, scour protection)
- Preparing work schedules and contract specifications
- Performing scour assessments and asset inspection of structures above/below ground
- Engaging with Network Rail, local authorities, and national environmental bodies
This role is primarily located in the southwest of England and is open to:
- Senior Engineers (near Chartered)
- Principal Engineers (Chartered)
- Qualified applicants working towards Chartered or Incorporated Engineer status

Key Responsibilities
- Lead design and project delivery from concept through to detailed engineering for flood projects
- Conduct scour assessments and develop protective designs
- Support infrastructure clients (internal/external) in culverts, weirs, walls, and scour solutions
- Prepare documentation for contractors and ensure aligned workflows
- Engage with clients and stakeholders across industry bodies
Requirements
Qualifications & Experience
- Degree in civil or flood risk engineering
- Post-degrees experience in hydraulic designs tied to flood and river diversion projects
- Knowledge of flood and river diversion design principles
- Proficiency using CAD or Civil 3D
- Strong site supervision experience preferred
- Familiarity with scour, coastal, and river/ash engineering mitigations
- Drive for Chartered or Incorporated Engineer status
