About the Role
WSP is seeking Civil Engineers with experience in Flood & Coastal Erosion Risk Management (FCERM)—specifically in optioneering, design development, and project/programme delivery—to support the growth of our technical expertise.
We work with clients and organisations across the UK, including:
- Environment Agency
- Network Rail
- Local Authority Highways Asset Teams
- Local Authority FCERM Programmes
- Other asset management organisations
Our role involves delivering designs from concept to detailed stages across sectors like flood defences, coastal engineering, and scour assessments/mitigation. While experience in scour assessments, scour mitigation design, and local authority FCERM delivery is beneficial, it is not essential.
Key projects include:
- Hydraulic culverts, weirs, walls, outfalls, and scour protection.
- Highways, rail, and property infrastructure projects.
Levels Sought:
- Senior Engineer (near Chartered)
- Principal Engineer (Chartered)

Design & Scour Assessment:
- Appraising and developing outline and detailed designs for flood/coastal projects, including scour solutions, defences, and hydraulic structures.
- Leading scour assessments, coastal/river flood-related appraisals, and design development from concept to detailed schemes.

Client Collaboration:
- Working with Network Rail, Local Authorities, and environmental organisations to deliver high-impact solutions.
- Engaging with internal/external infrastructure clients and stakeholders.

Contractor & Specification Work:
- Preparing work schedules and technical specifications for contractors.

Field Role & Asset Inspection:
- Conducting scour assessments and asset inspection works (both above and below ground structures).
Requirements
We’re looking for candidates who can demonstrate:
- Qualification: Degree in Civil or Flood Risk Engineering.
- Technical Experience:
- Post-degree experience in hydraulic designs associated with river/flood defence works.
- Knowledge of flood/river mitigation design principles and solutions.
- Software Proficiency: Experience with CAD/Civil 3D.
- Site Experience: Ideally in site supervision or asset inspection roles.
- Communication: Strong written/verbal communication skills.
- Project Delivery: Demonstrated ability to deliver high-quality, on-time projects within budget.
- Professional Development: Working toward Chartered (CEng) or Incorporated (IEng) status.
