About the Role
WSP are seeking Civil Engineers with experience in Flood & Coastal Erosion Risk Management (FCERM) optioneering and design development, as well as project and programme delivery, to support our technical capability expansion.
We work with clients and projects across the UK, with a focus on supporting:
- The Environment Agency
- Network Rail
- Local Authority Highways Asset Teams
- Local Authority FCERM programme delivery
- Other asset management organisations
Our work spans designs from concept to detailed execution across sectors including civil, hydraulic, flood, and coastal engineering. While experience in scour assessments, scour mitigation, and local authority FCERM is beneficial, it’s not essential.
Responsibilities
As part of this role, you will:
- Appraise and develop outline and detailed designs for flood-related projects, including:
- Scour assessments
- Scour solutions
- Flood defences
- Coastal engineering
- Lead scour, coastal, and river flood assessments, appraisals, optioneering, and design schemes.
- Collaborate with internal and external clients to design:
- Hydraulic structures (culverts, weirs, walls, outfalls, scour protection, etc.)
- Large infrastructure projects (highways, rail, property).
- Prepare work schedules and contractor specifications.
- Conduct scour assessments and asset inspections of above/below-ground structures.
- Work closely with:
- Network Rail
- Local authorities
- National environmental organisations

Location: Primarily on the southwest of England.

What We’re Looking For
Essential Requirements
- Degree in civil or flood risk engineering (or related field).
- Post-degree experience in hydraulic designs related to flood or river defence.
- Knowledge of flood/river diversion design principles and solutions.
- Experience with CAD or Civil 3D for design work.
- Site experience (preferably in a site supervision role).
Desirable Experience
- Scour assessments & mitigation design experience.
- Working towards Chartered or Incorporated Engineer status.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills.
- Proven ability to deliver high-quality projects on time and within budgets.
- Experience with local authority or environmental programmes.
