I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?
Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.
Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.

As you might expect, the Rolling Stock team is not only involved in passenger rolling stock. We also undertake projects on locomotives as well as On-track Machines and engineering vehicles.
Not all the tasks will be purely mechanical which is why you will have a broad knowledge of Rolling Stock and be able to take control of projects and tasks with limited supervision. You will have good interpersonal skills and be able to easily communicate with your colleagues and be comfortable liaising and communicating with our clients.
You will not only be responsible for the technical delivery of projects, but you will be comfortable managing budgets, programmes and looking after the commercial side of projects. You may also be required to manage a small team in the course of the project delivery.
The role is hybrid, however a flexible mindset is essential. You may be required to work on-site at our client’s premises for a period of time, as well as in our Derby office or other locations as the job dictates.
