Room Manager - Mapperley (Maternity Cover)

Room Manager – Nursery (1 Year Fixed-Term Contract)

Team/Business Area: Nursery Hours: 30-40 hours per week Line Manager: Head of Nursery Contract: 1 year fixed-term

About the Role

As Room Manager, you will lead the daily operations of your room or unit, ensuring seamless care, curriculum delivery, and team excellence. This role demands a balanced approach—prioritising the needs of children, parents, your team, and the business alongside delivering our ambitious early years programme.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Setting and maintaining high operational standards across your room/unit
  • Inspiring and developing Apprentice and Qualified Early Years Educators
  • Representing Cherubs Nurseries as a Designated Safeguarding Lead
  • Promoting a culture of excellence in early years education

You’ll be the driving force behind ensuring all children thrive, while fostering a supportive environment for your team to grow and excel.

What You’ll Be Doing

👶 Child-Centric Responsibilities

  • Ensure Cherubs Nurseries’ age-appropriate routines are consistently delivered, offering a wide range of developmental activities and post-school support.
  • Oversee bi-weekly planning cycles, aligned with assessments, cohort analysis, and children’s interests, ensuring adherence to Cherubs’ standards.
  • Manage Nursery App records, including:
    • Child profiles
    • Parent communication
    • Daily diaries, accident logs, and observations
    • Progress tracking
  • Maintain high standards of child hygiene and presentation, including regular diaper changes and personal care.
  • Lead room/unit management including:
    • Planning boards and displays
    • Storage organisation
    • Cleanliness and furniture maintenance
  • Curate snack and mealtime routines, complying with food policy, allergies, intolerances, and dietary requirements.
  • Collaborate with Head of Nursery to uphold a robust Key Person System, ensuring smooth transitions for children and effective parent communication.

📢 Communicate with Purpose

  • Assign clear daily/weekly duties to your team, considering their experience and competencies.
  • Lead daily handovers with parents as the primary positive contact, professionally representing your unit and Cherubs.
  • Attend monthly meetings with your Head of Nursery to align on room/unit goals and business objectives.
  • Sustain open communication with staff, sharing nursery updates, and addressing queries collaboratively (or escalating to relevant personnel).

  • Fulfill a Designated Safeguarding Lead role, ensuring compliance with child protection policies and local safeguarding procedures.
  • Support in event planning, including Summer Fair, Preschool Graduation, Fairy Night, Parent’s Evening, and Stay & Play sessions.
  • Ensure punctual completion of room checks, forms, and assessments to meet organisational standards.
  • Maintain a thorough understanding of Cherubs’ policies and procedures, promoting adherence within your team.

🔍 Seek Out Solutions

  • Address both positive and negative parent feedback, taking decisive action (consulting Head of Nursery when necessary).
  • Oversee first aid and medication administration with diligent documentation and compliance.
  • Support children with additional needs (e.g., SEND or EAL), coordinating with Head of Nursery, SENDCo, and parents to access resources.
  • Facilitate positive settling processes for new children, utilising tools like Family Books and home-from-home approaches.

👥 Look Out for Each Other

  • Onboard new educators, fostering confidence and aligning them with Cherubs’ standards.
  • Champion team recognition, sharing positivity at briefings, training events, and on social media.
  • Prepare and support your team for:
    • Internal audits
    • Mock Ofsted inspections
    • Live Ofsted inspections
