About the Role
As a Deputy Chief Engineer (R&T), you will:
- Coordinate with Safran Landing Systems (SLS) functions on behalf of the Chief Engineer to ensure cost-effective, high-quality delivery of diverse projects across the R&T technology segment.
- Lead and develop next-gen technologiesCritical across Landing Gear and Integration (LGI), Wheel and Brakes (W&B), System and Equipment (SE), and MRO, pushing them from basic research to industrial application.
- Own the Technology Readiness Level (TRL) roadmap, working alongside the Chief Engineer and programmes teams to deliver:
- Requirement definition and maturation of technologies to TRL 6 (e.g., coupon to full-scale testing).
- Partnerships with technical experts, internal SLS divisions (including LGI, W&B, SE, MRO), and external academia/industry.
- Report progress to senior management, funding agencies, and stakeholders.

Key Responsibilities
Technical Leadership
- Oversee R&T portfolio planning – balancing cost, quality, and timelines while achieving major technical milestones.
- Define requirements for technology research projects, ensuring alignment with [Safran’s] innovation vision.
- Drive deliverables from proof-of-concept to full-scale validation (e.g., TRL transitions).
Collaboration
- Build cross-functional partnerships across Safran (internal domains) and external partners (university labs, test facilities).
- Engage with transverse teams (LGI, W&B, SE, MRO) to ensure cross-domain coordination.
- Work with decision-makers to establish feasibility andcost-effectiveness of proposed innovations.
Strategic Representation
- Present technical updates to Safran senior leadership and external funding programme boards.
- Serve as a trusted advisor on breakthrough technologies, contributing to high-impact project selections.
Requirements
To cultivate excellence at Safran, you should bring:
Technical & Academic Background
- A strong degree-level qualification (or equivalent experience) in an engineering discipline (e.g., aerospace, mechanical, materials science, technology).
Leadership & Project Skills
- Proven research environment experience, preferably in technology maturation or innovation projects.
- Project management competence, with a demonstrated results portfolio (e.g., delivering complex, cross-functional initiatives).
- Team leadership with leadership for a UK-funded project team (approximately 5–6 members).
