RTTPathway Validation Specialist – Urology Team (Rank 6 – £35,308–£42,401 per annum)
Job Overview
University Hospital Southampton NHS Foundation Trust invites applications for the role of an RTT Pathway Validation Specialist within the Urology team (within Surgery). This is an opportunity to play a critical role in ensuring seamless, compliant referral-to-treatment (RTT) pathways for surgical patients.
Main Duties of the Role
As part of the Urology team, the post holder will:
- Use advanced, specialist knowledge of the 18-week RTT pathways to validate surgical patient journeys, ensuring all pathway events are accurately recorded and fully compliant with:
- National RTT rules
- UHS standards
- Identify, investigate, and correct data quality issues within surgical RTT pathways by:
- Applying expert understanding of causes of poor data quality
- Ensuring corrections align with national decisions (ND) and local guidance
- Review, assess, update, and validate RTT data across UHS systems (including Patient Administration System (PAS)) to:
- Ensure surgical pathways are complete, accurate, and reflect true patient status
- Interpret and apply complex RTT guidance to:
- Support accurate reporting
- Maintain high-quality surgical data for:
- Operational performance
- Waiting list management
- Statutory reporting
- Act as the RTT champion for Surgery by:
- Providing expert advice to colleagues
- Supporting cross-team collaboration (clinical and administrative)
- Contributing to RTT training initiatives to:
- Improve understanding, consistency, and data quality across the organisation
- Drive continuous improvement by:
- Highlighting recurring issued
- Recommending process changes
- Collaborating with operational teams to strengthen RTT compliance and pathway accuracy

General Duties
Core Responsibilities
- Validate patient pathways in line with:
- 18-week RTT rules
- National guidelines
- UHS access policies
- Assess, analyse, interpret, and adjust patient journey data in Trust’s information systems to ensure accuracy
- Liaise with staff to:
- Obtain necessary data for RTT pathway validation
- Ensure proper alignment with rules
- Act on pathway errors to:
- Prevent patient breaches of the 18-week window
- Provide 1-to-1 training and mentoring on RTT rules
- Act as the primary RTT point of contact for queries
- Validate open pathways, collaborating with:
- Clinical staff
- Operational management teams
- Validation team colleagues
- Line management
- Corporate information team
- Escalate issues following UHS department guidelines
- Maintain records of validated pathways, including:
- Auditable comments for each record
- Plan workload proactively, adapting to fluctuations with minimal supervision
- Audit and confirm RTT data accuracy, reporting issues in a structured format to enhance future data entry
- Support Central Validation Team by:
- Covering colleagues in annual leave/sickness absence
- Participating in new staff induction
- Contributing to team training programs
- Work with the Outpatients Administration Centre to:
- Review working practices
- Find efficiencies and improve processes
- Contribute to:
- Development and updating of SOPs
- Recommending policy improvements to enhance service quality
- Assist in:
- Internal audits
- Production of ad-hoc reports

Requirements
Person Specification
Essential Qualifications, Knowledge, and Experience
- GCSE (or equivalent) in English & Maths (Grades 4–9)
- A Level or NVQ Level 3 in:
- Busines Administration
- Customer Care (or equivalent)
- Ability to:
- Attain in-depth knowledge of UHS policies, procedures, and 18-week pathway rules
- Gain experience in RTT validation and cross-specialty pathways
- Commit to mastering UHS patient information systems
- Develop Level 3 Patient Pathway Workflow (PPW) training experience
- Significant administrative experience, including:
- System maintenance
- Confidentiality belt under GDPR compliance
Desirable Experience
- Prior experience training teams in national standards
