SACT Specialist Practitioner (Advanced) - Progressive 6 to 7
Job Overview University Hospital Southampton NHS Foundation Trust is delighted to offer a fantastic opportunity to work with us.
Position: Specialist Practitioner (Advanced) – SACT (Systemic Anti-Cancer Therapy) Team Contract: 12-month fixed-term post Band: Potential progression from Band 6 to Band 7 (depending on candidates’ competencies)
We are seeking an experienced, motivated, and committed nurse with a passion for excellence in patient care and clinical outcomes. This role requires the ability to work autonomously in a hospital environment, ideally with experience leading nurse-led clinics.
Who We Are Looking For

Nursing professionals with a proven track record of:
- Autonomous working in healthcare settings
- Experience within oncology, hematology, or related specialties
- Collaboration in multi-disciplinary teams
- Desire to develop leadership and advanced practice skills

Ideal but not essential qualifications:
- History taking, physical assessment training
- Non-medical prescribing qualification
- Advanced communication or counselling skills qualifications
For those new to these skills, there is a pathway to upskill through structured support.
Key Responsibilities
Core Duties
- Leadership and clinical autonomy: Provide specialist nursing care for a defined patient caseload, acting as a key worker to coordinate treatment and support.
- Patient-centered coordination: Oversee therapeutic management of patients within agreed care settings, delivering expertise collaboratively with the multi-disciplinary team.
- Education and advocacy:
- Deliver care, advice, and support to patients and their families.
- Educate healthcare professionals and develop system-wide standards.
- Initiatives and innovation:
- Drive practice initiatives to enhance quality and seamless care.
- Influence service improvements at divisional and Trust levels, advancing clinical practice in line with patient needs.
- Collaborative excellence:
- Serve as a role model for inter-professional working.
- Represent mentor and educator roles, fostering an environment of continuous learning.
- Education and training:
- Attain a Level 7 Postgraduate Certificate (60+ credits) or Master’s qualification within two years of appointment.
- Hone leadership skills, such as policy development, change management, and advancing clinical competencies within the SACT speciality.

Education, Qualifications & Experience
Essential Criteria
- Registered Nurse or Registered Allied Health Professional (AHP) on relevant NMC or HCPC register.
- Evidence of ability to:
- Support and manage clinical learners.
- Facilitate effective learning in practice environments.
- Demonstrated:
- Leadership experience within the SACT advanced practice field.
- Evidence of policy improvement and implementation.
- Specialised clinical experience in systemic anti-cancer care.
- A commitment to Continuous Professional Development.

Desirable Criteria
- Advanced training in advanced communication, counselling, or leadership.
- Previous roles as a clinical mentor or practice assessor.
- Certification in supervising advanced practice pathways or professional development.
