About Vulcain Engineering
Vulcain Engineering, an international engineering consultancy, supports global industrial leaders in their transition to a more responsible and sustainable future. We support our customers in the design, construction, commissioning, and operation of their complex infrastructure projects that will shape the world of tomorrow. With operations in 17 countries and employing over 6,000 staff worldwide, our business responds to the needs of our clients by delivering high-value engineering expertise tailored to our clients’ most complex challenges.
In the UK, we have a key focus in the Nuclear sector, contributing to ground-breaking projects, such as Hinkley Point C (HPC) and Sizewell C (SZC).
The Position: Safety Case Engineer
As a Safety Case Engineer, you will play a key role in ensuring that all technical and design changes on the project are effectively integrated and compliant with nuclear safety case requirements. You will act as the bridge between engineering, safety case authors, and the site delivery teams—ensuring that any proposed changes are properly assessed against licence conditions and approved through the appropriate governance routes.
This is not a traditional Health & Safety role. Instead, it focuses on the nuclear safety case, its supporting documentation, and how changes to plant design, configuration, or operation impact the overall safety justification.
Some of the main responsibilities of the Safety Case Engineer will include:
- Support the development, maintenance, and integration of the project Safety Case in accordance with nuclear site licence conditions.
- Act as the interface between site delivery teams and the central safety case function, ensuring that technical changes are understood, assessed, and appropriately controlled.
- Coordinate the review and approval process for safety case changes, ensuring timely escalation where formal approval is required.
- Provide expert input into the technical integration of engineering modifications, ensuring that safety case impacts are identified and managed.
- Liaise with regulatory and assurance bodies as required to support compliance with Office for Nuclear Regulation (ONR) expectations.
- Maintain clear and accurate documentation of changes, justifications, and approval outcomes.
- Support continuous improvement in safety case management processes and promote a strong nuclear safety culture across project teams.

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?
Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.
Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.
