Safety Engineer

Principal Safety Engineer

New Malden £60,000 - £75,000 SC Security Clearance Required

What’s Your Possible?

At Northrop Grumman UK, you are part of a team pushing the boundaries of innovation, addressing critical challenges, and shaping the technology solutions of tomorrow. This mindset—Defining Possible—goes beyond solving problems; it fosters career growth and drives positive impact in the communities we serve.

The Opportunity

This isn’t just a job—it’s a mission.

As a Principal Safety Engineer, you will lead safety assurance activities across the design, development, and maintenance of cutting-edge naval infrastructure for Platform Management Systems, including surface ships and submarines. You’ll be instrumental in shaping mission-critical naval operations, reporting to the Product Safety Manager and acting as a pivotal member of the Safety Engineering team, overseeing critical analyses like:

  • HAZOPs (Hazard and Operability Studies)
  • FFA (Functional Failure Analysis)
  • FTA (Fault Tree Analysis)
  • FMECA (Failure Mode, Effects, and Criticality Analysis)
  • LOPA (Layer of Protection Analysis)

Our UK Defence business stands as a Sovereign software and systems centre of excellence, supporting UK-wide and internationally deployed multi-domain command and control systems. Your work is foundational to the modern backbone of the Royal Navy, driven by a spirit of fierce curiosity, dedication, and innovation to solve the world’s most pressing challenges.

Your Key Responsibilities

  • Develop safety activities and work schedules aligned with programme requirements to meet milestones and satisfy safety targets.
  • Oversee safety assurance for naval systems, ensuring the design meets hardware, software, and firmware standards.
  • Lead safety audits at internal/external design reviews and safety committee meetings.
  • Ensure technical documentation adheres to company and customer procedures.
  • Guide safety-related analysis to influence engineering design decisions and propose improvement solutions.
  • Present complex safety arguments to stakeholders, both internally and externally.
  • Collaborate across multi-disciplinary teams (CRP, hardware, software, ILS engineers, project management, supplier teams) to deliver high-quality output.
  • Stay informed on the latest standards and best practices to drive continuous improvement.
  • Contribute to Monthly Staff Meetings, Team Briefings, and SOFT reports.
  • Mentor junior employees as required.

Reasons to use Rodeo

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?

Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.

Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Start with a chat, not a search bar

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.
