Safety Engineer

Safety Engineer (Rail Systems Safety & Assurance) – Birmingham & UK Rail Projects

About the Role

We are seeking a Safety Engineer with rail systems safety and assurance experience to support major rail and infrastructure projects across Birmingham and the wider UK rail network.

The successful candidate will:

  • Develop and maintain safety assurance deliverables.
  • Manage hazards and ensure compliance with UK rail legislation and standards.
  • Collaborate with multidisciplinary engineering, delivery, client, and assessment teams.

This role suits candidates with experience in:

  • Safety Engineering, Systems Safety Engineering, Rail Assurance, or Safety Consulting.
  • Safety-critical rail environments, including infrastructure, operations, and rolling stock.

Key Responsibilities

Safety Management & Assurance

  • Develop and support project safety management and safety assurance activities across:
    • Rail systems
    • Infrastructure
    • Operations
    • Rolling stock projects
  • Prepare and maintain safety deliverables, including:
    • Safety Plans
    • System Definitions
    • Hazard Logs
    • Hazard Records
    • Safety requirements
    • Safety arguments
    • Engineering Safety Cases
  • Support structured safety workshops, such as:
    • HAZID (Hazard Identification)
    • HAZOP (Hazard and Operability Study)
    • FMEA (Failure Mode and Effects Analysis)

Compliance & Risk Management

  • Apply RSSB standards, Railway Group Standards, Rail Industry Standards, and relevant guidance to project safety assurance.
  • Ensure compliance with:
    • CSM-RA / CSM-REA (Common Safety Method – Risk Assessment)
    • ROGS (Railway Operator General Safety)
    • Railways Interoperability requirements
    • CENELEC standards (e.g., EN 50126, EN 50128, EN 50129 where applicable)

Stakeholder Engagement & Communication

  • Coordinate with design, engineering, operations, construction, testing, commissioning, maintenance, and assurance teams to:
    • Gather evidence
    • Close hazards effectively
  • Prepare safety evidence for:
    • Independent assessment
    • Client review
    • Authorisation, acceptance, and approvals
  • Engage with:
    • Clients
    • Assessment bodies
    • Regulatory stakeholders
    • Delivery partners
    • Resolve safety and assurance issues

Technical Review & Safety Culture

  • Review technical documentation, specifications, and design changes to identify:
    • Safety implications
    • Assurance requirements
  • Promote a proactive safety culture and ensure:
    • Lessons learned and good practice are embedded
    • Industry guidance is incorporated into project delivery

Essential Experience

✅ Gain in a rail safety, systems safety, engineering assurance, or safety assurance role. ✅ Practical understanding of:

  • RSSB standards, guidance, safety principles
  • Application within UK rail projects ✅ Knowledge of:
  • Hazard management processes
  • Maintenance of hazard logs and safety records ✅ Familiarity with UK rail safety legislation, standards, and assurance frameworks, including:
  • CSM-RA / CSM-REA
  • ROGS ✅ Ability to produce:
  • Clear, structured safety documentation
  • Technical reports
  • Assurance evidence ✅ Strong stakeholder management skills, including:
  • Working across multidisciplinary teams ✅ Excellent written and verbal communication skills. ✅ A degree, HNC/HND, or equivalent experience in:
  • Engineering
  • Safety
  • Systems engineering
  • Transport / rail-related disciplines

🔹 Experience with:

  • Major UK rail, light rail, metro, tram, HS2, Network Rail, or transport infrastructure programmes 🔹 Familiarity with:
  • CENELEC lifecycle processes
  • Safety integrity concepts 🔹 Experience as:
  • Workshop facilitator or technical secretary for:
    • HAZID, HAZOP, or safety review sessions 🔹 Ability to support independent safety assessment routes, such as:
  • NoBo, DeBo, AsBo, or other approval processes 🔹 Professional membership (or progression towards) of:
  • IET, ICE, IMechE, IOSH, SaRS 🔹 Experience with safety-critical systems, including:
  • Signalling
  • Rolling stock
  • Control systems
  • Stations, depots, operations, railway infrastructure
