Safety Health and Environment (SHE) Advisor

Science and Technology Facilities Council

Salary: £58,346 per annum | Open Ended | Full Time Location: UK Astronomy Technology Centre, Royal Observatory Edinburgh, Blackford Hill, Edinburgh, EH9 3HJ Closing Date: 12th July 2026

Together, our scientists, technologists, engineers, and support services explore the unknown and deliver breakthroughs that change the world. From space exploration to cancer treatment research, you’ll become part of a team making a meaningful impact.

We’re advancing UK forefront science, with excellence in all support services—from infrastructure to compliance.

About the Role

The STFC Safety Health Environment (SHE) Group at the Royal Observatory Edinburgh (ROE)—where the UK Astronomy Technology Centre (UK ATC) is based—holds an opening.

Based within the UK ATC, where the Director also serves as Head of ROE, this role will be pivotal in refining SHE management and implementing continuous improvements. Collaborating closely with multiple stakeholders—tenants, contractors, employees, and science facility users—this position requires a senior SHE specialist to boost compliance and efficiency.

Key Responsibilities

  • Advise UK ATC management, employees, contractors, tenants, and scientists on SHE policies to ensure adherence to STFC’s SHE Management System.
  • Develop STFC SHE Codes, leveraging experience, audits, industry standards, and forward-looking guidance.
  • Deliver high-quality SHE support to internal and external stakeholders (staff, contractors, visitors).
  • Maintain and innovate ROE SHE policies and related documentation (data/regulations).
  • Investigate and prevent SHE incidents, including injuries, near misses, fires, environment, and vehicle issues, sharing learnings organization-wide.
  • Audit and monitor the effectiveness of the SHE Management System and site-specific processes.
  • Act as a bridge between SHE stakeholders, including:
    • Safety and Environment Committees
    • Trade union safety reps
    • HSE and emergency services
  • Lead/assist in developing and conducting SHE training (both physical and online), ensuring full compliance at ROE.
  • Travel and engage across STFC locations as needed.

Reasons to use Rodeo

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?

Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.

Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Start with a chat, not a search bar

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.
