Location: Preston, MN Telework Eligible: No Employment Type: Part-Time (unlimited-term) Full/Part Time: Part-Time Work Hours: Day Shift (8:00 a.m. – 4:30 p.m.) Days of Work: Monday – Friday Travel Required: No Salary Range: $28.26 – $41.43 hourly (pro-rated for part-time)

Bargaining Unit: 214 (Minnesota Association of Professional Employees) FLSA Status: Non-exempt


About the Role

The Safety Officer for the Minnesota Veterans Home (MVH) in Preston will implement, promote, coordinate, monitor, and evaluate safety and health programs. This role ensures compliance with regulations while improving the well-being of employees, residents, and visitors within a healthcare environment.

The position is designated as part-time with a scheduled work commitment of at least 40 hours per 2-week pay period. Qualified applicants will initially be eligible for partial employer contribution toward health and dental insurance.


Key Responsibilities

Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Developing, maintaining, and auditing safety programs to ensure compliance with regulations.
  • Analyzing workers' compensation data and identifying risk mitigation strategies.
  • Creating and promoting health and wellness initiatives for staff and residents.
  • Ensuring adherence to occupational health, safety, and environmental regulations (OSHA, Minnesota OSHA, EPA, MPCA, NFPA).
  • Conducting safety training sessions for employees and residents.
  • Writing and presenting incident reports, compliance findings, and progress updates.
  • Ensuring emergency preparedness and management within the facility.
  • Assisting with inspections, compliance determinations, and enforcement where applicable.

Minimum Qualifications

Experience Requirements

  • Two years of experience in environmental health and safety, demonstrating expertise in at least two of the following:
    • Maintaining and auditing safety programs.
    • Analyzing workers’ compensation data (or identifying risk reduction strategies).
    • Designing and/or promoting health and wellness programs.
    • Ensuring compliance with occupational health and safety regulations.

Note: A bachelor’s degree in: • Safety • Industrial Hygiene • Risk Management/Control • Occupational Safety • Safety Management/Science • Safety Engineering or a closely related field may substitute one year of experience.

An associate’s degree in the above fields may substitute six months of experience.


Professional Competencies

The successful candidate must demonstrate:

  • Advanced knowledge of OSHA, Minnesota OSHA, EPA, MPCA, NFPA, and other relevant regulations.
  • Critical analysis skills to assess workplace hazards and develop mitigation strategies.
  • Strong written and verbal communication for incident reports, inspections, and training.
  • Ability to implement and deliver safety training effectively to individuals and groups.

Preferred Qualifications

Candidates with experience in the following areas will be strongly considered:

  • Three or more years in environmental health and safety (with healthcare focus).
  • Bachelor’s degree in a safety-related field (preferred).
  • Familiarity with CMS, Veterans Affairs, and Minnesota Department of Health standards for healthcare settings.
  • Experience in a healthcare or long-term care facility.
  • Prior exposure to OSHA compliance inspections and enforcement.
  • Experience with surveillance systems (CCTV, security camera operations).
  • Knowledge of emergency preparedness and disaster management protocols.

Additional Requirements

  • Background check (Minnesota DHS) will be conducted on finalists; successful completion required.
  • Tuberculosis (TB) screening (Mantoux skin test or chest X-ray) prerequisites.
