Gatwick Ground Services (GGS) provide airport ground operations at London Gatwick and London City Airports. As a wholly owned British Airways subsidiary, we take great pride in delivering the same impeccable customer service and fully comprehensive training. We are proud to deliver the highest standard of ground handling to British Airways and our other airline partners.

Gatwick Ground Services was established in 2016, to support the ramp operations of British Airways at Gatwick. Following its success, the company branched into Aircraft Cleaning in 2018. In 2020, Passenger Services formed the newest department within the GGS business to provide an all-round ground handling solution across London Gatwick and London City Airports.

Our operations across two stations support British Airways, Air India, Iberia Express, Qatar Airways, Singapore Airlines, and Vueling Airlines, providing a complete ground handling solution.

The Role

Safety, Security and Training Manager

Accountable for the overall safety, security, and training of Gatwick Ground Services (GGS), ensuring the operation meets all regulatory, corporate, and airline partner requirements, ensuring independent safety oversight, robust assurance, and a strong safety culture, while enabling operations through clear standards, risk management, and effective escalation. The role also provides leadership and governance for operational training.

Accountabilities

  • Safety and Security Performance, Culture, and Risk Management

    • Safety and security performance across GGS operations, ensuring compliance with all regulatory, corporate, and customer airline safety standards and processes.
    • Lead the continuous improvement of the Safety Management System (SMS), ensuring a ‘Just Culture’ through the organization, with effective communication channels, engagement rhythms, safety forums.
    • Define core safety and security KPIs.
    • Ensure effective identification, assessment, and mitigation of operational and business safety and security risks.

  • Reporting, Investigation, and Assurance

    • Lead the development of a frontline-led reporting culture, improving both volume and quality of safety reporting.
    • Ensure a consistent, proportionate approach to incident investigation and root cause analysis.
  • Compliance

    • Own the maintenance of the Integrated Management System (IMS), safety governance structure.
    • Maintain clear roles, responsibilities, and accountabilities defined within the IMS.
    • Maintain and deliver the audit, inspection, and assurance framework set out in the IMS.
  • Training Compliance

    • Ensure mandatory and operational training compliance across GGS.
    • Oversee effective systems for training tracking, certification, and compliance.
    • Ensure learning from incidents, audits, and operational insight is embedded into training delivery.
  • Continuous Improvement

    • Represent GGS in internal and external safety and security forums.
    • Implement benchmarking and best practice approaches to drive performance and continuous improvement.
    • Translate safety data and operational insight into targeted improvement actions.

Skills & Capabilities

  • Strong leadership capability with the ability to influence across multiple teams and functions.
  • Data-driven approach with the ability to translate insight into practical actions.
  • Strong communication skills, with the ability to engage frontline through to senior stakeholders.
  • High attention to detail with a structured, process-led approach.
  • Ability to operate at both strategic and operational levels.

Essential

Qualifications & Experience:

  • Demonstrable experience in safety, compliance, or operational risk management within a regulated environment.
  • Experience in aviation ground handling safety.
  • Knowledge of aviation regulatory frameworks.
  • Experience leading safety or compliance frameworks and driving performance improvement.
  • Experience managing or influencing training and competency frameworks.
  • Proven ability to lead and deliver change in operational environments.

Desirable

  • Relevant safety, compliance, or operational qualifications.
