sales engineer

Reports to: Sales Manager
About the Role
The Sales Engineer is responsible for developing, managing, and driving sales of products and systems across the assigned territories. The role includes:
- Direct sales effort
- Collaborating with distributors
- Requiring a strong technical understanding
- Commercial expertise
- Building long-term customer, consultant, and partner relationships
The position is based in the Uckfield office, but candidates located elsewhere in the United Kingdom can apply, provided they can travel occasionally.
Key Responsibilities
- Set and achieve revenue targets – Manage direct sales while supporting distributor performance in the assigned territory.
- Customer and stakeholder relationships – Build and maintain strong relationships with key customers, consultants, and project decision-makers, ensuring regular engagement throughout the sales cycle.
- Sales pipeline management – Identify and track project opportunities from initial conceptualisation to order placement, including preparing and following up on quotations.
- New business generation – Actively develop sales through prospecting, networking, referrals, and market research.
- Technical and commercial guidance – Offer appropriate support to customers and distributors with technical and commercial insights, coordinating with Engineering, Operations, and Service teams as needed.
- Distributor support – Develop distributors by conducting product updates, training sessions, and representing the company professionally (e.g., at meetings, trade shows, and events).
- CRM and record-keeping – Maintain precise, up-to-date records of sales, pipeline activities, forecasts, and customer information.
- Market intelligence – Monitor competitors and market trends, delivering structured feedback to inform sales strategy, marketing efforts, and product development.
- Compliance – Adhere to all company policies, quality standards (ISO 9001), and export controls. Maintain confidentiality of commercial and technical information.
- Miscellaneous duties – Perform any additional reasonable tasks assigned by the company.

Requirements
Experience & Qualifications
-
Minimum 3 years of experience in technical sales, preferably in the following sectors:
- geotechnical
- civil engineering
- structural monitoring
-
Strong technical expertise in electromechanical devices.

- Exceptional communication and interpersonal skills to influence:
- technical stakeholders
- commercial stakeholders
- diverse, international customer base
-Ability to:
- prepare accurate and timely technical quotations, reports, and CRM submissions;
- work independently with strong self-motivation and organisational skills;
- relate effectively to engineers (internal and external);
- maintain professionalism across all working relationships.

Experience in small or medium-sized manufacturing, specifically within the UK.

Good knowledge of geophysical instrumentation.
Technical Qualification
- HNC or Degree (equivalent) in:
- Engineering
- Geotechnics
- Instrumentation (or similar discipline).
Transport & Mobility

Full UK driving license.
-
Willingness to travel up to 30% of the time.
Technical & Office Skills
- Proficiency in:
- CRM software
- MRP (Manufacturing Resource Planning) tools
- Microsoft Office Suite (Excel, Word, etc.)

- Base salary (dependent on experience level).
- Sales commission (up to 20% of base salary).
