Sales Engineer

Sales Engineer – Water Mist Systems

Hall & Kay Birmingham, GBR – On-site

You’ll lead the sales and proposal process for new water mist system projects, working closely with our expert teams to turn enquiries into lasting client relationships.


About the Role

We seek a skilled Sales Engineer with deep technical knowledge in sprinkler/water mist systems to champion our range of solutions through sales, proposal Development, and technical engagement.

With 140+ years of history in fire protection and security, we design, supply, install, test, and maintain fire prevention systems across the UK, working with some of the most respected construction firms and industries. Your role demands a commercial-minded technician who thrives at the intersection of design, sales, and client strategy.


What You’ll Be Doing

  • Inquiry Management

    • Review and respond to allocated water mist project enquiries via email, telephone, or site visits, updating our CRM system to reflect progress and next steps.
    • Align proposal development with customer deadlines, delivering accurate, high-quality submissions.
  • Technical & Commercial Development

    • Analyze customer specifications, project drawings, and bills of quantities, ensuring proposals are realistic, competitive, and compliant.
    • Collaborate with design engineers and project management to refine technical input, risk assessments, and scope adjustments.
    • Restaurant the financial and technical risk involved, prioritising solutions with high lifetime value and client satisfaction.
  • Proposal Creation & Client Engagement

    • Produce detailed technical quotations that address project requirements with precision.
    • Monitor submitted quotations through to closure, tracking client feedback and developing win/loss KPIs with clear lessons learned.
    • Engage directly with clients, insurers, end-users, and main contractors, building long-term relationships and enhancing Hall & Kay’s reputation for quality.

    • Identify new sales opportunities during client interactions, aligning proposals with client goals for maximum impact.

About You

Essential

  • Technical Expertise

    • [Proven experience in designing or engineering sprinkler systems, water mist systems, or equivalent fire protection systems in construction.]
    • Deep understanding of reading contract drawings, BIM processes, quantified specifications, and technical standards (e.g., BS 128 heard sprinkler code, water mist standards).
    • High analytical ability to navigate contract & equipment specifications, and understand MSDS data sheets (chemical safety, pipework calculations, etc.).
  • Sales & Estimating Talent

    • [Experience developing technical quotations, bids, and proposals (particularly in fire protection or security industries).]
    • Proven track record in preparing accurate, competitive pricing based on project complexities and timelines.
    • Numerate skills enhanced by strong Microsoft Office experience and AutoCAD or AutoCAD Viewer capability for drawing management.
  • Regulatory Awareness

    • Aptitude for construction programs and timelines, building regulations, industry standards, and legislative frameworks (e.g., BS EN standards, HSE bulletins).
  • Relationship & Commercial Ability

    • Creative, client-focused, and highly persuasive in discussions with engineers, contractors, and procurement teams.
    • Strong commercial awareness with motivation driven by quotation accuracy, win rates, and repeat business.
  • Organisational & Team Fit

    • [Ideally past sales/estimating within the Fire Protection industry (or a related technical niche).]
    • Agile with deadlines, thriving in evolving priorities and complex projects without losing focus on deadlines.
    • Exceptional attention to detail—reducible to ensure proposals eliminate errors.
