About The Role

Wastewater Sampler Technician (2)

  • Full Time - 37 hours per week flexible
  • Fixed Term Contract – 18 months
  • Salary – from £25,878 to £29,100 per year (depending on experience)
  • Location – Washington base location (Travel around the North East Region is required)

About The Role

Are you ready to make a real difference to the environment every single day? We have an exciting opportunity to join our dedicated Sampling Operations Wastewater Team at Northumbrian Water as a Wastewater Sampler Technician.

At Northumbrian Water, we take pride in the quality of our wastewater and the crucial role it plays in protecting and enhancing our environment. As a Wastewater Sampler Technician, you’ll be at the heart of this, working hands-on across our region to ensure our high standards are consistently met.

Health and Safety is a cornerstone of everything we do. We believe in Everyone Home Safe Every Day, and we support this with robust procedures and a strong safety culture throughout the business.

This is a dynamic, physical, and highly varied role. You'll be travelling across the North East, from Sewage Treatment Works to rivers, boreholes, and industrial sites, collecting wastewater and effluent samples. Your day might involve on-site testing, equipment calibration and maintenance, or working in challenging outdoor conditions, rain or shine. You’ll be lifting manhole covers, transporting sampling equipment, and carrying out your work to strict, accredited ISO standards.

Our operation runs 24/7, 365 days a year, and our technicians are the backbone of this commitment. This means you’ll be part of a weekend and out-of-hours rota, with the opportunity to contribute to a service that never stops protecting the environment.

Whether you're sampling Trade Effluent Customers, tackling emergency events, or ensuring compliance with strict methodologies, your work will directly contribute to the clean, safe management of wastewater across the region, especially in the Teesside area, where a strong presence is maintained with industrial and chemical customer effluents.

If you're someone who enjoys working outdoors, values high standards, and wants to play a vital role in environmental protection, this could be the perfect opportunity for you.

About You

We’re looking for diligent, conscientious, and customer-focused individuals who take real pride in their work. If you have a keen eye for detail, a full UK driving licence, and a commitment to working to the highest standards, you could be a great fit for our team.

As part of this role, you'll be expected to uphold the rigorous sampling and documentation standards required by our UKAS ISO17025 and MCERTS Accreditation. Whether you're working independently or as part of a team, you’ll need to be self-motivated, reliable, and professional in your approach.

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?

Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.

Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Start with a chat, not a search bar

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.
