Scada Engineer

SCADA & Communications Engineer (EPC – HV Substation & BESS Projects)

Location: Glasgow Employment Type: Full-time, Permanent Reports to: Lead Electrical Engineer / Engineering Manager

About the Role

This is a key technical position ensuring our energy infrastructure achieves safe, reliable, and cyber-secure control and data connectivity between site assets, substations, and remote monitoring centres.

You’ll collaborate closely with electrical, protection, and commissioning teams across all project stages—from concept and detailed design through to FAT, SAT, and final handover.


Key Responsibilities

  • Design and develop SCADA and communication architectures for HV substations and BESS installations (11–400 kV).
  • Specify, configure, and integrate:
    • RTUs
    • PLCs
    • HMI systems
    • Network equipment (routers, switches, firewalls)
  • Develop:
    • SCADA I/O schedules
    • Communication diagrams
    • Interface Control Documents (ICDs)
  • Define and implement communication protocols, including:
    • IEC 61850
    • IEC 60870-101/104
    • DNP3
    • Modbus TCP/RTU
  • Ensure robust and compliant data, control, and telemetry links between:
    • Site assets
    • DNO/TO control centres
    • Client systems
  • Support FAT/SAT testing and commissioning of SCADA and communication systems.
  • Liaise with:
    • DNOs
    • TOs
    • NGESO on telemetry, RTU configuration, and interface acceptance.
  • Ensure designs comply with:
    • National Grid
    • DNO
    • ENA standards, while meeting:
    • Cybersecurity
    • IT/OT network security
  • Work closely with:
    • Protection & Controls
    • Electrical Design
    • Commissioning teams
  • Manage all technical documentation and workflows via Procore or equivalent platforms.
  • Apply knowledge of:
    • CDM Regulations 2015
    • The Health and Safety at Work Act 1974
    • Other key HSE legislation.

Qualifications & Experience

Essential:

  • Degree (or equivalent) in:
    • Electrical Engineering
    • Electronic Engineering
    • Control Engineering
    • Communications Engineering
  • Proven experience designing or delivering:
    • SCADA and communications systems in:
      • HV substations
      • Grid connections
      • BESS projects
  • Strong understanding of:
    • Industrial communication protocols
    • Control architectures
  • Hands-on experience with:
    • RTUs
    • PLCs
    • HMIs
    • Network devices (major OEMs: e.g., Siemens, Schneider, GE, SEL, Emerson)
  • Familiarity with:
    • Network configuration (VLANs, routing, VPNs, firewalls)
    • IEC 61850
    • IEC 60870
    • DNP3 standards
  • EPC or design-and-build delivery experience
  • Experience integrating:
    • BESS Controllers
    • Inverters
    • Transformers & Auxiliaries within SCADA systems
    • Coordination of data exchanges between:
      • SCADA–PPC
      • SCADA–EMS
      • SCADA–DNO/IDNO interfaces

  • Understanding of:
    • Grid code compliance
    • Telemetry
    • DNO/NGESO interface requirements
  • Knowledge of:
    • Cybersecurity standards (e.g., ISO 27001, NCSC CAF) for OT systems
  • Experience with:
    • Procore
    • BIM 360
    • Other digital collaboration tools
  • Chartered Engineer status or working toward professional registration (IET or equivalent).
