Lead Scala Developer
£390 per day, Inside IR35
Initial 3-month contract
Newcastle, once per month onsite
BPSS clearance required
Experience of working for a UK Government Organisation is essential
We are looking for an experienced Lead Scala Developer to support a key public sector digital programme.
This role is suited to a lead-level Scala Developer who can provide hands-on technical expertise, set engineering standards and support delivery within a fast-paced agile environment.
You will be working on a discovery-focused project, so previous experience leading technical teams through discovery work would be highly beneficial. You will need to be comfortable working with stakeholders, shaping technical direction and supporting the wider team to deliver high-quality, well-tested software.

Key responsibilities
- You will lead Scala development activity, contributing to hands-on engineering while also setting standards and supporting best practice across the team.
- You will work closely with delivery, product, architecture and engineering colleagues to understand requirements, guide technical decisions and ensure solutions are robust, maintainable and fit for purpose.
- You will also support other developers where required, providing mentoring, technical guidance and code review input.
Essential skills and experience
You will need:
- Strong Scala development experience
- Lead-level software engineering experience
- Previous experience leading a team on a discovery project
- Strong TDD experience
- Ability to set engineering standards and lead others when required
- Excellent communication skills
- Strong stakeholder management experience
- Experience working in agile delivery teams
- Previous public sector or government experience is essential
- Ability to interview and start at short notice
