School Attendance Officer

Attendance Officer - Outwood Academy Acklam

Role Overview

Academy: Outwood Academy Acklam Start Date: 01 September 2026 Salary: £23,390 - £24,475 Working Pattern: 37 Hours Per Week, Monday to Friday, Term Time Only + 5 Days

Are you passionate about ensuring every student maximises their potential through consistent attendance? As an Attendance Officer, you will be crucial in implementing whole-school strategies designed to improve attendance levels and actively reduce persistent absence. This role blends:

  • Operational duties such as conducting home visits & late gate patrols
  • Essential administrative support
  • Resilient engagement with students and parents to address attendance barriers

Attendance Management

  • Drive whole-school attendance strategies, including:
    • Daily Late Gate patrols
    • Maintaining registration & attendance Management Information Systems (operating automated parent contact systems for absences)
  • Ensure real-time accuracy of attendance data in systems such as CMIS or alternative academy software.

Student & Parent Engagement

  • Directly engage with students & parents to discuss absence reasons and provide:
    • Appropriate support
    • Constructive challenge
  • Data-driven interventions, including:
    • Preparing & presenting detailed attendance reports
    • Processing referrals for Fixed Penalty Notices

Communication & Compliance

  • Publicise attendance updates via multiple channels (e.g., academy website, letters, digital platforms).
  • Ensures compliance with statutory standards and UK attendance legislation.

Requirements & Qualifications

Essential Criteria

  • Excellent communication skills: Verbally & in writing, engaging with diverse audiences (students, families, colleagues).
  • Strong organisational abilities: Time management with mandatory deadlines (e.g., attendance reports, referrals).
  • Proficiency in ICT: Microsoft Office & Excel (excel data management, reporting, automated reminders).
  • Resilience & conflict resolution: Ability to remain calm and professional amid difficult conversations.
  • Professionalism: Consistent behaviour in emotionally charged scenarios.

Desirable Experience

  • Previous work in schools or attendance-related roles.
  • Experience with CMIS or SIMS systems.
  • Safeguarding certification (or willingness to obtain one).

Mandatory Checks

  • Enhanced DBS check.
  • Satisfactory references.
  • Compliance with UK safeguarding policies (Keeping Children Safe in Education).
