Attendance Officer – Outwood Academy Acklam
Role Overview
Academy: Outwood Academy Acklam Start Date: 01 September 2026 Salary: £23,390–£24,475 pa Working Pattern: 37 hours per week Term Time only + 5 additional days Key Question: Are you passionate about ensuring every student maximises their potential through consistent attendance?
This operational yet deeply impactful role focuses on improving and maintaining attendance by leading whole-school strategies, including:
- Conducting home visits
- Performing late gate patrols
- Building resilient engagement with students, parents, and wider communities to address attendance barriers

Responsibilities
As Attendance Officer, your role involves:
Core Duties
Student & Family Engagement
- Consult with students, parents, and guardians to:
- Identify and resolve attendance barriers
- Establish trust and communication
- Implement behaviour change strategies
- Partner with pastoral teams to minimise disruption via early intervention.
Operational Role
- Conduct structured home visits to support persistent absent students.
- Conduct late gate checks, ensuring punctuality policies are enforced where appropriate.
- Monitor and analyse attendance data to flag trends and concerns.

Strategic Impact
- Work with leadership to refine whole-school attendance strategies.
- Advise on policy implementation, such as term-time absence procedures.
- Contribute to reducing persistent absence, aiming to maximise learning opportunities for all students.
Administrative Support
- Input and maintain accurate attendance records in the school management system.
- Collaborate with HR, safeguarding, and leadership on related operational tasks (e.g., referrals to external agencies).
Person Specification
Essential Requirements
- Profound understanding of the impact of attendance on student achievement.
- Excellent implementation skills with the ability to:
- Build relationships with families
- Identify underlying issues affecting attendance
- Present solutions clearly and constructively
- Evidence of using data to drive improvements (preferably within an organisational context).
- Customer-focused advocacy skills, particularly working with vulnerable families.
- Moral authority coupled with practical problem-solving under pressure.
Preferred Experience
- Experience in a not-for-profit, public-facing, or community-focused role.
- Knowledge of child development and emotional intelligence in pastoral settings.
- Administration skills using Electronic Attendance Software (e.g., MIS systems like SEYMS or Kaplan Pathfinder).
- A passion for education, equal opportunities, or youth welfare.
