School Crossing Patrol Officer – Silver End Primary School
Role Overview Stacked primary (full or part-time): Permanent, Term-time hours Pay: £13.46 per hour Location: Silver End Working Style: Operational, field-based
Position Summary Join Essex County Council’s School Crossing Patrol Team and contribute to your local community as a School Crossing Patrol Officer at Silver End Primary School. Your responsibility will be to ensure the safety of pedestrians, particularly children, when crossing roads during school drop-off and pick-up times.
An open position: 1 x covering Temple Lane Crossing
Hours per week: 7 hours 30 minutes approximately (term-time only, academic year: 39 weeks). Duties:
- Morning: 45 minutes (8:10 AM – 8:55 AM).
- Afternoon: 45 minutes (2:40 PM – 3:25 PM).
- Operating Monday to Friday during school term times.
Uniform and equipment will be provided, along with thorough training to support your role.
Responsibilities
As a School Crossing Patrol Officer, your primary tasks include:
- Providing appropriate assistance to individuals with mobility impairments and ensuring inclusive safety practices.
- Communicating regularly with school staff and local partners regarding child safety, attendance, and road conditions.
- Regularly assessing risks at the crossing site and promptly reporting any concerns or safety hazards to the supervisor.
- Assisting in compiling reports on incidents such as traffic violations, near-misses, or accidents at the crossing alongside relevant stakeholders.
- Ensuring all uniform and equipment are well-maintained and request replacements as needed.
- Altitude verbal and physical signals to direct drivers, safely control traffic flow, and assist pedestrians in crossing the road.
- Adhering to Traffic England's guidelines while maintaining professionalism and providing visible safety guidance.

Requirements
To qualify for this role, you should:
- Be reliable and punctual, with a strong commitment to public safety.
- Have good communications skills, demonstrating approachability.
- Possess a good general grasp of personal safety and traffic awareness.
- Be able to work safely in an operational outdoor environment.
- Be able to work in a bitterly cold and extreme weather conditions in Essex.
- Hold an up-to-date valid driving licence (essential for understanding traffic flow and contributing a positive safety mindset).
- Be willing to register for a Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) check (formal request made post-employment confirmation).
- For an open role covering multiple locations, flexibility and willingness to travel if ‘duty-based’ shifts are required.
Note: A willingness to progress your career progression in mainland Essex while embracing evolving community transport solutions is actively encouraged. Responsibilities are applicable under Safeguarding Children and Adults requirements.
