Salary: NJC Scales (2025-6) - EP011 - (Scale 45-47) (£56279 - £58437)

Are you a strategic financial leader looking to make a meaningful impact? We are seeking an exceptional Finance and Business Manager to spearhead our school’s financial control, human resources, and administrative services.

This is a pivotal senior role reporting directly to the Headteacher. You will take ownership of the school’s financial and business operations, manage a talented team of middle managers, and work closely with Governors to ensure resources are optimised to deliver the highest quality education provision.

Key Responsibilities

  • Financial Control & Operations: Lead budget setting, payroll, internal audits, management accounts, and the accurate submission of statutory DfE financial returns.
  • Line Management: Directly line manage and develop 3 key middle managers (Finance, HR, and Admin), overseeing a wider team of support staff.
  • Human Resources & Cover: Oversee the HR function - staff recruitment, retention, absence management, and the daily deployment of teaching and non-teaching cover.
  • Governance & Leadership: Present comprehensive financial reports, risk analysis, and personnel updates to Governor Committees and school leadership.
  • Joint Strategy & Commerciality: Partner with the school Operations Manager on joint procurement, policy creation, income generation (e.g., lettings and alumni), and high-value funding bids (such as CIF grants).

What We Are Looking For?

The role of School Finance and Business Manager requires a combination of formal finance/ business education, specialised school management credentials, and multi-disciplinary professional experience.

  • Financial Experience: Proven experience in budget management, financial accounting, and internal scrutiny (school/public sector finance experience is highly desirable but not essential).
  • Leadership: Experience managing multi-disciplinary teams (Finance, HR, Administration) and coaching middle leaders to foster professional growth.
  • Strategy: Ability to identify commercial risks and opportunities, optimise income channels like lettings, alumni, and manage major contracts.
  • Communication: Confident translating financial and personnel data into clear insights for the Headteacher, SLT, and the Board of Governors.

Qualifications

  • Degree or equivalent qualification: essential
  • 5 GCSEs including Maths and English (grade 4-9) or equivalent: essential
  • Professional full or part accountancy qualification or willing to work towards: desirable
  • Professional qualification in business management or accountancy: desirable
  • CIPD or other appropriate HR qualification or relevant experience and willing to work towards: desirable
  • Evidence of recent training and experience in whole school leadership and management: desirable
  • Hold a leadership qualification: desirable
  • School Business Management qualification e.g. CSBM or willing to work towards: desirable
