Schools Compliance Assistant
Closing date: 12 July 2026 Salary: £24,796 - £25,185 per annum Working pattern: Term-time weeks only
Role summary
You’ll be providing a frontline compliance service across a large portfolio of schools and council establishments. This will include:
- Ensuring all statutory safety requirements for electrical equipment and water systems are met.
- Conducting portable appliance testing (PAT) and legionella monitoring, identifying risks, and implementing appropriate actions to maintain safe environments for staff, pupils, and visitors.
- Working independently across multiple sites, planning and executing an efficient programme of visits.
- Collaborating with site managers and headteachers to arrange access and communicate findings.
What you’ll do – key responsibilities
- Perform legionella monitoring, measuring water temperatures at selected outlets to confirm safety compliance.
- Complete equipment testing and conduct minor electrical repairs, marking failed appliances clearly.
- Actively design termly work programmes, ensuring efficient scheduling.
- Accurately record test results and label electrical items supplied or tested.
- Notify adverse results and defective equipment to site managers/headteachers.
- Provide reports to site managers or headteachers, outlining:
- Safe use and operation of electrical equipment/water systems.
- Any identified remedial actions required.

What we’re looking for – knowledge, experience & skills
Essential
- GCSE passes (or equivalent) in English and Maths.
- NVQ qualification in electrical testing.
- Sound understanding of:
- Basic electrical safety principles.
- PAT and legionella monitoring compliance.
- Awareness of health and safety responsibilities across multiple sites.
- Proficiency in accurate data recording, including:
- Maintaining asset registers.
- Keeping compliance records.
- Experience delivering a customer-focused service, including liaising with:
- Site staff, managers, headteachers.
- Capacity to work independently across multiple locations, managing varied workloads.
- Ability to:
- Record information accurately.
- Use digital systems for data input/retrieval.
- Strong organisational skills to plan and prioritise site visits.
- Excellent communication skills (written + verbal), including explaining:
- Technical details clearly to non-technical stakeholders.
- Confident use of IT systems (laptops, data recording tools).
- Full UK driving licence + access to a personal vehicle.

Desirable
- Knowledge of relevant legislation (e.g., electrical safety, legionella control).
- Awareness of compliance requirements in schools/public sector environments.
- Understanding of basic maintenance techniques for electrical equipment.
- Previous experience with:
- PAT testing.
- Legionella monitoring.
- Similar compliance checks.
- Experience in:
- Schools, estates, or public sector property management.
- Minor repairs or basic maintenance.
- Ability to:
- Analyse test results and identify issues.
- Apply practical problem-solving for faulty equipment/site constraints.
- Build positive working relationships across varied sites.
Additional information
- Full-time role (37 hours/week, 38 weeks/year – term-time).
- Regular travel across Somerset, including rural areas (may involve physical effort).
- Occasional lone working.
- Enhanced DBS check required.
- 25 days of annual leave (plus bank holidays).
