Scientific and Policy Officer – Poultry Specialist
About the Role
We're recruiting a Scientific and Policy Officer committed to animal welfare, with a focus on poultry specialization, to join the RSPCA Farm Animals Department.
Key Details
- Contract: Permanent
- Hours: 35 hours per week (Mon–Fri)
- Location: Hybrid work
- Work from home
- Attend a monthly team meeting at the Horsham hub
- Occasional ad-hoc travel to London for meetings
- Travel Requirement: Must have a UK Driving Licence (visits to farms/sites required)
About the RSPCA Farm Animals Department
The department aims to:
- Promote the highest standards in farm animal welfare
- Improve attitudes toward animals
- Strengthen farm animal-related laws & their enforcement
- Develop RSPCA welfare standards for species, including poultry
- Progress research into Welfare Outcome Assessment
Role Overview
As a Scientific Officer, your focus will include:
- Developing RSPCA welfare standards for poultry, with influence beyond the RSPCA Assured farm assurance scheme
- Advisory and advocacy work related to poultry welfare
- Collaborating across farming/food industries, scientific research, and UK/EU governance

Responsibilities
Daily Tasks
- Contribute to poultry-specific welfare standards
- Provide scientific/technical advice to RSPCA Assured members & the scheme
- Deliver scientific input (internal/external) for projects, reports, and campaigns
- Engage with stakeholders including:
- Farming & food sectors
- Governmental and research institutions
- Act as a public representative (however required)
Requirements & Experience
Essential
- Degree: Masters in:
- Animal/human/agricultural science
- Animal welfare or
- Bachelor’s + equivalent practical experience in these topics
- Knowledge: Strong expertise in animal welfare & production, especially poultry
- Research & Reporting: Experience with verbal/written presentations
- Analysis: Well-developed analytical skills + attention to detail
- Communication: Excellent written/verbal skills with a broad audience (e.g. translating technical science)

- Minimally advanced qualification in a relevant field
- Prior experience demonstrating transferable strengths even if not fully matching standard criteria
