Company Description

Instruct-ERIC is a pan-European distributed research infrastructure making high-end technologies and methods in structural biology available to users.

Our aim is to promote innovation in biomedical science and operates on a non-economic basis within the scope of the ERIC Regulation.

Instruct-ERIC is comprised of 17 Member States: Belgium, Czech Republic, EMBL, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Israel, Italy, Latvia, Lithuania, Netherlands, Portugal, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, and United Kingdom.

Instruct-ERIC provides open access to cutting edge structural biology, specifically supporting research that uses integrated approaches and technologies. It operates with the following principles:

Role Description

Instruct-ERIC has an open position for a Scientific Communication Officer.

We are looking for an experienced science graduate with a passion for communicating world-class science to broad communities including both scientific and general audiences.

The appointee will be a motivated and organised individual with strong interpersonal skills to help us implement our communication plan and outreach to local, national, and international groups.

The role is based at the Instruct-ERIC offices in Oxford, UK.

Key Relationships

You will work with a diverse group of people, and you will have regular personal contact with the:

  • Instruct Director
  • Instruct Hub Coordinator
  • Project Managers
  • Technical and financial staff
  • Scientists at all levels, policy makers, users of Instruct services, and general audiences
  • External project partners

You will also have broad contact with third parties across Europe and internationally through email, telephone, and tele/videoconference.

Responsibilities/duties

You will:

  • Work with international partners
  • Write scientific review articles, news items, for websites, and e-newsletters
  • Produce professional dissemination resources (brochures, posters)
  • Manage social media campaigns for various communities
  • Web design, including creating new webpages
  • Assist in creating video resources for promotion of Instruct and training
  • Represent Instruct-ERIC at networking meetings, scientific conferences, and exhibitions
  • Maintain the CRM system and ensure that data protection procedures are adhered to
  • Analyse communications data and produce reports to improve performance
  • Set up and host online meetings and webinars, and plan in-person events both in Oxford and remote locations
  • Manage an image bank, ensuring that it is refreshed, and that all imagery has been appropriately licensed
  • Develop an updated public engagement campaign to showcase structural biology in preventative and therapeutic solutions

Selection Criteria

Essential

  • Postgraduate qualification in structural biology or related topic.
  • Excellent communication: writing, editing, presenting, and proof-reading skills; the ability to write content for websites including summarising scientific articles for scientific and lay audiences.
  • Strong inter-personal skills and experience of dealing with a wide range of people including academics, business clients, external partners, and the public, including young people.
  • Strong organisational skills with experience of prioritising a varied workload and meeting deadlines using own initiative and with minimal supervision.
  • Can-do attitude to work, open to learn new skills.
  • Strong technical skills including fluency in Microsoft Office.
  • Creative vision to help develop appealing content that all can understand, with an eye for detail and design.
  • Ability to undertake occasional travel within Europe.

Desirable

  • Practical experience in web design and functionality.
  • Experience with Adobe suite, specifically graphic design and video production.
  • Experience in filming interviews.
  • Previous experience in a communications role or project management skills.
  • A second European language.
