Scientist I/II – Biochemist in Formulation Development
Location: Cambridge (UK) Group: Analytics
In this lab-based role, you will join the formulation development team within Abzena’s Analytics group, working on client-facing projects in a fast-paced, supportive environment. Abzena provides early to mid-phase biotherapeutic and ADC drug development solutions, supporting academia, biotech startups, and blue-chip pharmaceutical companies in developing better treatments for patients. The Analytics team focuses on:
- Antibody and ADC characterisation
- Critical quality attributes of biopharmaceuticals
- Developability studies
- Formulation development
- Cellular proteomics
About the Role
The Formulation Team in Cambridge specialises in formulation development, spanning early pre-clinical screening to late-stage clinical studies, including:
- Preformulation tasks
- Clinical in-use stability
- Container compatibility testing
- High-concentration injectable drug products (intravenous or subcutaneous)
You will have the opportunity to expand your technical skills, collaborate across multidisciplinary projects, and grow within a prospectively focused organisation.
Responsibilities
Core Duties
- Independently design and execute routine and complex experiments as required
- Perform advanced/novel techniques under supervision (e.g., chromatography, electrophoresis)
- Interpret analytical data accurately and maintain records in electronic lab notebooks
- Schedule work efficiently to meet project deadlines
- Analyse and validate own data, ensuring high standards
- Document experimental results and CPV (corrected print version) beginner applicable steps
- Communicate progress to line manager and Group Director in a structured manner
- Prepare data for internal reports and contribute to regulatory documentation
- Prepare and present technical findings (slides at internal and client meetings)
- Draft or refine quality control procedures and standard operating procedures (SOPs)
- Supervise and mentor junior staff in basic scientific techniques

Requirements & Qualifications
Minimum Academic Background
- Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in:
- Biochemistry
- Chemistry
- Related life sciences
Preferred:
- Some implementation of formatting principles in industry
Technical Skills & Experience
- Hands-on lab skills in analytical biochemistry or biochemical research
- Experience with analytical techniques, including:
- High-pressure liquid chromatography: SE-HPLC, IEX-HPLC
- Capillary electrophoresis: CE-SDS, icIEF, CZE
- Intermediate proteomics-based technologies (e.g. antibody characterisation)
- Competency in data processing using:
- Excel and basic statistical tools
- Specialist software: Chromeleon or equivalent
- Familiarity with protein analytics, in-house formulations, and characterised experimental conditions
