Biochemist – Formulation Development (Scientist I/II)
About the Role
Abzena’s formulation development team within the Analytics group, based in Cambridge (UK), has a vacancy for a Biochemist (Scientist I/II). In this lab-based role, you’ll work on client-facing projects while developing new analytical techniques in a fast-paced, supportive environment.
Abzena delivers a comprehensive range of integrated discovery-to-development services for biotherapeutics and antibody-drug conjugates (ADCs), supporting academic groups, biotechs, and pharma. The Analytics group specialises in:
- Antibody and ADC characterisation
- Critical quality attribute determination
- Developability studies
- Formulation development
- Cellular proteomics
The Formulation Team at Abzena Cambridge provides expertise in formulation across early pre-clinical to late-stage (clinical in-use and container compatibility) projects, with a focus on high-concentration liquid biologics for IV or SC injection.
Key Responsibilities
- Independently design and execute routine and complex experiments
- Apply complex/novel analytical techniques under supervision
- Perform interpretation of analytical results
- Maintain electronic lab notebooks and detailed data documentation
- Ensure work is delivered on schedule and within quality standards
- Analyse and submit own data for reporting and presentation
- Prepare technical reports, PowerPoint presentations, and quality documents
- Provide mentorship and supervision to junior staff
- Demonstrate strong communication skills (internal/externally with clients)
- Remain independent, proactive, and flexible while collaborating as a team member

Requirements & Qualifications
Essential
- BSc or MSc in Biochemistry, Chemistry, or a related science discipline
- Strong lab-based analytical skills, ideally in an industrial/commercial environment
- Demonstrated expertise in:
- Protein analytics (preferred)
- Analytical characterisation techniques, including:
- High-pressure liquid chromatography (SE-HPLC, IEX)
- Capillary electrophoresis (CE-SDS, icIEF, CZE)
- Protein formulation development (advantageous)
- Competency in scientific data analysis (e.g., Excel) and specialist software (e.g., Chromeleon)
- Attention to detail, problem-solving skills, and ability to:
- Work independently
- Plan and organise tasks
- Effectively report progress to management

Qualifications
- Preferred: MSc in a life science discipline
- Requires: Excellent ICT skills, including specialist software
- Should be able to:
- Analyse routine data
- Execute repetitive lab techniques (e.g., pipetting)

Remuneration & Benefits
- Salary range: £27,000 – £33,000 (Scientist I/II inclusive)
