Senior Scientist (Biophysics) –hire for growth
Role Overview
We are seeking a confident and experienced scientist with a strong biophysics background to join a fast-growing drug discovery services company based in Milton Park, Abingdon, Oxfordshire (Oxford region). The successful candidate will play a crucial role in both client-facing projects and collaborative discovery initiatives, applying quantitative biophysical approaches to advance our drug discovery programmes.
Main Responsibilities
- Design, plan, execute, lead, and deliver internal and client research projects
- Perform biophysics experiments to an exceptional academic standard
- Conduct in-depth data analysis, interpretation, and presentation (through written reports, presentations, posters)
- Maintain thorough electronic lab notebook documentation of all performed work
- Follow standard operating procedures (SOPs) and establish or review new SOPs as needed
- Provide project feasibility assessments to support our sales team
- Offer subject matter expertise in meetings with internal and external stakeholders, driving process improvements and setting best practice standards
- Stay updated on scientific and technical advancements relevant to the field
- Collaborate effectively within a multidisciplinary team to:
- Optimise workflows, mentor coworkers, and foster continuous learning
- Contribute forward-thinking ideas to technology development strategies
- Promote a culture of innovation and continual improvement

Qualifications & Experience
Essential
- Ph.D. to doctoral level education in biophysics, biochemistry, protein science, or related fields (or equivalent relevant R&D experience)
- 1-3+ years of postdoctoral or industrial drug discovery experience
- Hands-on experience with:
- Quantitative biophysical methods applicable to drug discovery
- Full SPR method development (data acquisition and analysis via Biacore software)
- Biacore 8K+ and T200 (fragment, small molecule, and biologics screening/ characterisation)
- Orthogonal biophysics techniques:
- nDSF (Near-UV Differential Scanning Fluorometry)
- DLS (Dynamic Light Scattering)
- SEC/MALS (Size-Exclusion Chromatography coupled with Multi-angle Light Scattering)
- PCA (assuming ‘GCI’ is a typo for Praseodymium-assisted'occasionly listed as PTC, though unclear) / FIDA buffer exchange-based mass effects
- Mass spectrometry (MS) for molecular interaction characterisation
- Proven ability to disseminate research findings via reports and oral presentations
- Experience with large datasets, incorporating data quality control (QC) and robust analysis

Desirable (but not essential)
- Proficiency with programming and troubleshooting of robotic liquid-handling systems
- Practical knowledge of recombinant protein expression for drug discovery/research contexts
- Experience with automated assay platforms, including:
- Trouble-shooting
- Method validation
