Specialist Community Public Health Nurse (SCPHN) in Health Visiting or School Nursing (Fixed-Term Student Programme)

About the Role
As a Specialist Community Public Health Nurse (SCPHN) in the Buckinghamshire Healthcare NHS Trust, you will make a vital contribution to enriching the lives of children, young people, and their families by implementing the Healthy Child Programme (0-19). This role offers hands-on, experiential learning within the Children & Young People’s Service, overlaying Health Visiting (0–5) and School Nursing (5–19).
You’ll support parents/carers, address key public health concerns, and drive innovation to reduce inequalities.

About the Team & Practice Structure
The Public Health Nursing (PHN) team delivers core health promotion services across two agebands:
- Health Visiting (Nursery Nurses) for children 0–5 years
- School Nursing for children 5–19 years
As a student nurse, you’ll train across two localities in Buckinghamshire to broaden your exposure while developing expertise under supervision.
Details:
- Practice-based element: attached to a PHN team in one locality, completing placements in another during extended training.
- Fixed-term for duration of university programme(+) – supernumerary status (extra time for learning).

The Purpose of This Post

Provide care delivery experience: Implement the Healthy Child Programme, ensuring tailored support for families, children, and young people.

Pursue SCPHN registration: Study and train alongside the NMC’s Specialist Community Public Health Nurse (Health Visiting or School Nursing) standards. Your workload remains fully supervised and educational-focused, allowing time for payroll and professional development.

Academic integration: Complete assessments on a university-approved SCPHN course alongside clinic/practice placements.
Expectations & Training
You will be trained and supported by a dedicated Practice Assessor and Practice Supervisor for the entire programme length. The role is nationally recognised as pioneering next-generation public health nurses.
