SCUK Regulatory Legal Counsel (12 Month FTC) – Fixed Term Contract

Santander Consumer Finance UK (SCUK) is based in Redhill, Surrey and provides motor finance to a network of car dealerships throughout the United Kingdom. We are seeking a Regulatory Legal Counsel to join us on a 12-month Fixed Term Contract, reporting to the Head of Legal. This is a hybrid role requiring at least 3 days per week on-site in Redhill (remote work unfortunately will not be considered).
About the Role
You will provide accurate and timely legal, regulatory, and corporate governance advice to all business areas, ensuring strategic and business objectives are delivered while monitors and controls legal risks. Your ‘Think Customer’ approach ensures compliance with legal and regulatory requirements.
Key responsibilities include:
- Anticipating, reviewing, and implementing new legislative requirements impacting SCUK
- Prioritising legal risk management across the business
- Supporting corporate/internal governance matters and commercial agreements
- Operating the internal legal function with clarity and efficacy

Key Responsibilities
Provide legal, regulatory, and governance expertise across the organisation:
- Legal point of contact: Advise the business on legal matters with timely, compliant, and customer-focused recommendations
- Regulatory horizon scanning: Stay ahead of emerging laws, regulations, and compliance obligations, collaborating with stakeholders to implement changes
- Contract drafting/reviewing: Responsible for drafting/updating commercial contracts, partner agreements, supplier arrangements, and other compliant documentation from inception
- Project delivery: Assist the Head of Legal in executing legal projects, including requirement reviews, risk assessments, and recommendations
- Risk management: Escalate identified risks in line with SCUK’s and Santander UK’s group risk framework
- Governance support: Assist with policymaking, procedural reviews, committee documentation, and governance matters for senior stakeholders (Head of Legal, Legal & Compliance Director)
- External and internal liaison: Coordinate external legal support, manage deep relationships with internal/external stakeholders, and generate demand for legal services
- Register & appendix compliance: Ensure alignment with Santander Group compliance standards

Requirements
We are looking for a UK qualified lawyer with a proven track record in in-house legal or senior law firm roles, specialising in:
- Relevant corporate/commercial legal experience, particularly in:
- Motor finance/ecom domiciled or procurement HEFT, supplier/intermediary relationships
- Compliance advice: Expertise in GDPR, competition law, anti-bribery (BCC), sanctions, and money laundering regulations
- Horizon scanning & awareness: Skilled at assessing regulatory trends and risks for a regulated financial services business
- Concur development: Ability to analyse complex issues, deliver options, and articulate clear advise to business teams and officials.
- Legal Continuities: Working knowledge of digital/e-commerce laws and regulations
- People and Dataskill Grammar: Strong communications skills – articulate with senior stakeholders (Head of Legal, Directors, Compliance) to explain and negotiate arrangements confidently
- Reporting & IT: seasoned report writer (both actionable and executive summary style) with the ability to navigate/assist process compliance reports

Hours:
- Monday to Friday, 09:00–17:00
Vetting:
