Apprenticeship & Training
- Apprenticeship Qualification: Level 2 Certificate Able Seafarer (Deck)
- Training Provider: North Kent College (schedule to be confirmed)
- Expected Duration: 24 months
- Schedule: Full-time (48-hour weeks), including sea phases and college-based learning
- Start Date: 14th September 2026
About the Role
As an Able Seafarer Deck Apprentice within our Defence Marine Services Team, you’ll gain hands-on experience alongside structured training to achieve your Able Seafarer (Deck) certification, while supporting essential vessel operations.

What You’ll Do
Your Key Responsibilities Include:
- Working as part of the deck department onboard assigned vessels
- Performing bridge watchkeeping duties, including maintaining a lookout during day and night operations
- Supporting routine vessel maintenance and assisting with:
- Operation of deck equipment
- Mooring systems
- Safety equipment
- Conducting housekeeping duties to maintain high standards in vessel accommodation and public areas
- Fully engaging in apprenticeship requirements, including completing tasks in the Able Seafarer (Deck) Training Record Book
- Ensuring the safety, security, and wellbeing of crew, vessel, cargo, and the marine environment

Requirements
This role is ideal for you if you meet the following criteria:
- Age: 18+ years old
- Education: 4 GCSEs (or equivalent), including:
- English at grade C or above
- Maths at grade C or above
- Security & Health:
- Ability to obtain a Security Clearance and meet UK citizenship requirements
- Eligibility for an ENG1 Unrestricted Medical Certificate, including eyesight standards
- Career Commitment:
- A genuine interest in a maritime career
- Sturdiness towards continuous learning and personal development
- Personal Attributes:
- Strong teamwork and communication skills
- Resilience, willingness to adapt, and the ability to handle diverse challenges and environments
