Qualification & Training
- Apprenticeship: Level 2 Certificate Able Seafarer (Deck)
- Training Provider: North Kent College (schedule to be confirmed)
- Duration: 24 months (Full-Time/48 hours)
- Schedule: Sea phases and college-based learning

About the Role
Ready to launch a rewarding career at sea? This Able Seafarer Deck Apprentice position offers:
- A hands-on role in supporting critical military training exercises
- Gain real-world experience while working towards MCA qualification and an AB Able Seafarer Certificate

As an apprentice, you’ll join Serco’s offshore operations team, where vessels provide essential support to military operations both domestically and internationally. Think adventure, teamwork, and development in a structured, disciplined setting.
Responsibilities
You’ll be entrusted to develop and perform key seamanship and safety tasks, including:

Navigation & Watchkeeping
- Assist with safe navigation and watchkeeping duties, including lookout responsibilities at sea and in port
- Follow procedures for shipboard safety and security processes

Deck & Operational Tasks
- Support mooring, anchoring, and towing operations
- Perform ropework, splicing, deck maintenance, and machinery operations (e.g., winches, windlasses)
- Maintain vessel cleanliness and readiness (decks, equipment, superstructure)
- Contribute to deck machinery maintenance and preservation tasks

Safety & Emergency Preparedness
- Participate in emergency drills (fire-fighting, sea survival, safety procedures)
- Assist with inspections and maintenance for operational readiness

Programme Compliance
- Complete all apprentice elements, including college phases, on-the-job sea service, and training record documentation
- Meet MCA-regulated sea service hours within the 24-month duration
- Typically committed after 50% trade theory training and completion of skill-based competencies to assess readiness for End Point Assessment

Professional Development
- Demonstrate Serco values and behaviours throughout the apprenticeship
- Comply with UK Merchant Navy Code of Conduct -Complete mandatory qualifications (e.g., Emergency Basic Training, Medical Certificate ENG1)
- End Point Assessment (EPA) with IAMI validation to verify competency
Requirements
To be considered, you must:
- Be at least 18 years old
- Be a British national with a valid UK passport and the ability to achieve Security Clearance
- Hold 4 GCSEs (or equivalent) in Maths, English, and two other subjects, grades C/4 or above
- Be able to obtain an unrestricted ENG1 medical certificate
- Be physically ready to travel and commit to a variety of locations
- Passage aboard Serco vessels
- Maintain flexibility between college attendance and operational deployment
