About the Role
Mott MacDonald is at the forefront of nature-inclusive development, seeking an experienced, motivated Ecological Clerk of Works (ECoW). This role ensures ecological commitments are delivered effectively during construction, maintaining compliance while fostering collaboration across teams.
As part of our 160-strong Ecology Team, you’ll play a pivotal part in bridging the gap between ecological design and real-world delivery. With a diverse portfolio spanning water, transport, power, and local authority projects nationwide, we provide a dynamic environment for professional growth.
Key Responsibilities
- Act as the Ecological Clerk of Works (ECoW) on construction sites, overseeing ecological compliance on-site
- Ensure adherence to legislation, planning conditions, and Construction Environmental Management Plans (CEMPs)
- Identify and mitigate ecological risks (e.g. protected species, habitats) and advise site teams on best practices
- Lead sensitive works, including species translocation, habitat protection, and vegetation clearance
- Conduct toolbox talks and environmental briefings for contractors and site teams
- Monitor progress to confirm compliance with method statements and habitat licences
- Record/site incidents and report findings, escalating issues as needed
- Liaise with clients, regulators, and external stakeholders (e.g. statutory bodies, ecological specialists)
- Support ecological data collection and contribute to project reporting
- Foster environmental excellence through continuous improvement initiatives

Candidate Specification
Essential
- Degree in Ecology (or a closely related subject)
- Experience as an Ecological Clerk of Works (ECoW)
- Effective written and verbal communication skills
- Strong decision-making and organisation abilities
- Willingness to travel extensively across the UK, including evenings
- Ability to travel to remote projects where no public transport is available
Desirable
- Technical specialism:
- Licensed to carry out protected species surveys (e.g. bats, birds, dormice)
- Relevant experience in ecological consultancy (or transferable skills)
- Hands-on experience with mental bats surveys, analysis of sound files, and infrared footage
- Strong ability to draft high-quality ecological reports
