At Mott MacDonald, environment and social assessments are central to all we do. Our Nature Services division provides essential ecological solutions, helping clients anticipate sustainability needs across industries—water, transport, energy, and local infrastructure.
Mott MacDonald is driving the future of Nature Services, seeking experts to embed ecological awareness into development projects, ensuring buildings, cities, and infrastructure become stewards of nature. We maintain INDUSTRY-LEADING ecological standards, with opportunities to shape national and international best practices.
Role Overview: Ecological Clerk of Works (ECoW)
Mott MacDonald’s Ecology Team supports a diversified project pipeline—from design to delivery—across the UK, with work in sectors including:
- Water companies
- Transport infrastructure
- Energy utilities
- Local authority and land-use planning
Your role? To bridge ecological expertise and on-site action—ensuring development projects meet environmental commitments while minimising harm to biodiversity. With 160+ ecologists within the team, you’ll join a collaborative environment where expertise is shared, and every project is a chance to shape environmental standards.
We are looking for a motivated, experienced ECoW to: ✅ Oversee ecological compliance during construction ✅ Maintain site security and integrity in high-impact environmental projects ✅ Act as the key interface between contractors, regulation, and Mott MacDonald’s own project teams
Key Responsibilities
- Site presence: Provide supervision and monitoring on construction sites to ensure ecological commitments are met.
- Regulatory and legal compliance: Uphold all environmental legislation, planning conditions, and CEMPs.
- Risk management: Identify on-site ecological risks (e.g., protected species, habitats) and provide practical mitigation advice.
- Supervision of sensitive works: Lead or guide ecological activities such as:
- Vegetation clearance and management
- Protected species relocation
- Habitat conservation measures
- Environmental training: Handle toolbox talks and contractor briefings to reinforce ecological best practices.
- On-site monitoring: Track works against method statements and licensing conditions, escalating issues as necessary.
- Record-keeping: Maintain accurate site logs, supplier discrepancies, and environmental reports.
- Stakeholder liaison: Coordinate with clients, regulators, and ecological consultants to ensure smooth project progression.
- Data contribution: Support coverage work and reporting for larger ecological programs.
- Promote sustained improvement: Drive environmental excellence on site through knowledge-sharing and best practice adaptation.

What You’ll Need
Essential Requirements
✔ A degree in Ecology (or a closely related discipline) ✔ Proven, hands-on ECoW experience (elevating from junior ecological roles to monitor and manage sites) ✔ Exceptional organisational and decision-making skills, especially regarding site compliance and conflict resolution ✔ UK travel ability: Willingness to work across the nation with flexible availability for evenings and weekends. Note: Remote and inaccessible sites require travel by private transport. ✔ Clear communication: Ability to brief thoroughly and verbally articulate technical matters to avoid misalignment
Desirable Relevance
🔹 Specialist licences (or experience) in:
- Protected species surveys (e.g., bats, birds, dormice, or but Command contains trochils)
- Bat surveying skills (e.g., sound analysis and thermal camera expertise) 🔹 Technical experience in Ecological Consultancy (with reporting and license documentation capabilities) 🔹 Ecologist registrar status (e.g., Licenced by SEPA, Natural England, and Netherlands authorities if applicable)

📍 Car access and willingness to visit multiple sites is a common requirement for our external ECoW roles.
