Second Chef - Bank - Care Home

Senior Chef – 0-Hour Contract (Bank Second Chef)

Are you a qualified chef looking to work with fresh seasonal food, with the opportunity to have more of a work-life balance and make what you do matter?

This is a casual, part-time role offering flexible working. As a Bank Second Chef at Barchester, you’ll deliver hotel/restaurant standards without long shifts or split weeks. In collaboration with the Head Chef, you’ll create nutritious, flavoursome, and balanced menus, while tailoring them around residents’ preferences.

We aim to deliver person-centred hospitality across all services and seek warm, motivated, and passionate chefs who are driven by quality.

Key Responsibilities

  • Managing the kitchen in the Head Chef’s absence
  • Assisting in menu development to ensure delicious, well-balanced dishes
  • Preparing fresh, seasonal ingredients to deliver high-quality, wholesome meals
  • Helping to foster a warm, efficient, and enjoyable kitchen environment
  • Working within budget and maintaining rigorous stock control
  • Conducting regular audits to uphold operational excellence
  • Supporting the Head Chef in leading and motivating the team

Essential Requirements

  • A warm, personable, and resident-focused approach
  • Professional certification, such as City & Guilds/NVQ/SVQ or equivalent
  • Leadership experience—able to inspire and guide a team
  • Knowledge of nutrition with an understanding of dietary needs
  • First-hand experience with fresh, seasonal food
  • Ability to cultivate a welcome, engaging atmosphere in the home
  • Deep understanding of HACCP practices
