Secondary History Curriculum Writer (Maternity Cover) – 1 Year Fixed Term
About the Role
United Learning is enhancing its United Curriculum, an ambitious and aspirational framework supporting teachers across England. While its use remains voluntary, the curriculum enhances lesson consistency, quality, and teacher efficiency by reducing planning workloads. Teachers can focus more on personalising instruction for individual pupils and classes.
As a Secondary History Curriculum Writer, you’ll contribute to a 1-year maternity cover within our central team, developing KS3 curriculum resources—specifically Year 9 content.
Your key responsibilities include:

Collaborating with the KS3 curriculum and History team (primary and secondary specialists) to refine the curriculum sequence and schemes of work.

Designing research-informed lesson resources, such as:
- Lesson slides
- Printable materials
- Teacher support tools
- Other materials where necessary Resources must align with evidence-based pedagogies, including Rosenshine’s Principles of Instruction, and must adhere to half-termly deadlines.

Partnering with central team members (e.g., artworkers, IP specialists) to ensure all incorporated texts, images, and sources meet licensing and permission standards.

Developing additional pupil-focused resources, such as:
- Knowledge organisers
- Explanatory videos

Creating teacher-focused resources, including:
- Subject knowledge videos
- Guidance for units and individual lessons

Facilitating inter-subject connections where relevant (e.g., linking History to English or Geography) with the broader secondary curriculum team.

Aligning resources with both the Secondary Curriculum Lead and History Adviser’s vision for high-quality teaching.

Iterating based on feedback from teachers, advisers, and senior leadership.
Other tasks may arise as assigned by the Curriculum and Assessment Team.
This opportunity is ideal for passionate educators who can contribute to their vision while directly impacting teachers’ work and classroom delivery.
Contract & Working Arrangements
- Role Type: Part-time (0.8 FTE, 30 hours/week).
- Remote Work: Fully home-based, with only occasional termly travel to London or Peterborough (expenses covered).
- Fixed-Term: 1-year maternity cover.
- Opportunities: Potential to extend based on National Curriculum updates.
