Want to work on engineering projects that will shape the future?

Are you passionate about delivering complex civil engineering works while driving safety, quality and innovation?

If you're ready to play a key role in delivering one of the UK's most significant infrastructure projects and help strengthen the nation's electricity network, this is your opportunity.

When you join Laing O'Rourke, you'll become part of an industry-leading engineering and construction team delivering some of the UK's most complex and rewarding infrastructure projects. We are committed to investing in our people through structured development, continuous learning and long-term career opportunities, supporting you to build a rewarding career with us.

What is the Great Grid Upgrade?

The Great Grid Upgrade is the largest overhaul of the UK's electricity transmission network in generations. Led by National Grid, the programme involves upgrading and expanding the high-voltage electricity network across England and Wales to transport increasing amounts of renewable energy, improve energy security and support the UK's transition to a low-carbon future.

The Grimsby to Walpole (GWNC) Enabling Works project is a key part of this programme, supporting the delivery of a new 114km overhead transmission line (OHL) running south from a new 400kV substation and 19-bay AIS substation.

The project will deliver the enabling works required ahead of the main transmission line construction, including ecology mitigation, site clearance and establishment, temporary access roads and crane platforms, temporary bridges, tower foundations (including piling) and reinstatement works. Ground investigations are currently underway, with the enabling works phase running through to the end of 2027 and overall project delivery continuing to approximately 2033.

What is the role?

We're looking for an experienced Section Engineer to support the safe, efficient and high-quality delivery of major enabling works across the GWNC project.

Reporting to the Project Manager, you'll manage a section of works from planning through to completion, coordinating subcontractors, ensuring engineering excellence and maintaining the highest standards of safety, quality and environmental compliance.

Working closely with the wider project team, designers, National Grid and specialist subcontractors, you'll play a key role in delivering this nationally significant infrastructure project.

What You'll Bring

  • Degree, HNC/HND or equivalent qualification in Civil Engineering or a related discipline.
  • Previous experience as a Section Engineer delivering major civil engineering or infrastructure projects.
  • Experience managing enabling works, earthworks, piling, temporary works, highways or similar heavy civil engineering activities.
  • Strong understanding of health & safety, quality management, temporary works and engineering assurance.
  • Experience producing and reviewing RAMS and ITPs, managing subcontractors and coordinating site operations.
  • Excellent planning, communication and stakeholder management skills, with the ability to lead engineering activities across multiple work fronts.
  • A collaborative approach and a commitment to delivering projects safely, on programme and to the highest quality standards.

Reasons to use Rodeo

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?

Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.

Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Start with a chat, not a search bar

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.
