Security Analyst ICT

ICT Security Analyst – Milton Keynes City Council

Job Introduction

  • Join our expanding team and be part of our investment in the future.
  • Receiving: An ICT Security Analyst to join our ICT service at Milton Keynes City Council.
  • The ICT Security team protects the council’s systems, data, and digital services so the council can continue to operate securely and reliably for the people of Milton Keynes.
  • The team:
    • Sets and maintains security policies, standards, and guidance
    • Manages cyber risk
    • Works across council services to ensure security is built into day-to-day operations, projects, and technology change
    • Monitors for threats and weaknesses
    • Investigates incidents
    • Leads response and recovery
    • Strengthens resilience through planning, training, and continual improvement
Support Activities
  • Supports compliance with recognised frameworks
  • Works with partners and suppliers to improve secure delivery
  • Helps the council adopt modern technologies in a safe, controlled, and responsible way
  • Helps Milton Keynes City Council remain resilient, trusted, and able to deliver essential services across more than 200 council services
Your Role
  • Help protect vital systems, reduce cyber risk, respond to incidents, and give practical advice that supports colleagues right across the organisation

Main Responsibilities

  • Protect council IT services by:
    • Identifying threats and vulnerabilities
    • Ensuring access to systems and information is limited to approved colleagues only
  • Develop and maintain:
    • Security documentation
    • Standards, procedures and guidance supporting confidentiality, integrity, and availability
  • Identify, assess, and prioritise cyber risks, helping to create and manage practical mitigation plans
  • Lead/support response to security breaches and failures, aiming to:
    • Limit impact
    • Reduce recovery time
    • Strengthen resilience
  • Monitor, audit, and review systems and configurations to:
    • Identify vulnerabilities and weaknesses
    • Provide clear recommendations for improvement
  • Work closely with:
    • Colleagues
    • Projects
    • Third-party suppliers to:
    • Build security into new and existing systems
    • Provide compliance advice
    • Improve cyber risk awareness across the council

The Ideal Candidate

Essential Requirements
  • Relevant professional qualifications, including:
    • A degree-level qualification in a relevant field
  • Industry-recognised training in information security, such as:
    • Either an ISCC² pathway
    • Or Microsoft Security, Compliance and Identity Fundamentals certification
  • Experience working in an information security function within a large organisation, with knowledge of:
    • Managing risk in complex environments
Desirable Technical Skills
  • Knowledge of:
    • Microsoft 365
    • The Power Platform
    • IT service and asset management
    • Security best practices, including:
      • ISO 27001
      • ITIL (Information Technology Infrastructure Library)
Soft Skills
  • Ability to:
    • Explain technical issues clearly
    • Translate security risks into practical advice for colleagues, suppliers, and customers
    • Work curiously, analytically, and collaboratively
    • Perform under pressure while solving problems diligently and respectfully
