I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?
Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.
Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.

Following this training, candidates will join the security engineering team, working directly on Darktrace's Cyber AI Analyst, automating the security analysis process. Candidates will own the end-to-end creation of AI-driven hypotheses that investigate activity across the digital estate, including initial research and development, release to customers, and continuous improvement based on feedback. This process will also include extensive collaboration with machine learning, security research, and software engineering teams.
What experience do I need?
This is a hybrid role, combining skills across security analysis, machine learning research, and software engineering. Since this position includes an initial training component, we do not necessarily expect candidates to have extensive experience in all three, but the role would best fit someone with a strong desire to learn and some combination of the following:
- Ideally a PhD in any technical area, or equivalent research background
- Knowledge or interest in the cyber security landscape, including network and AI threats
- Experience with Python, including asynchronous code and structured data analysis pipelines
- Knowledge of software engineering best practices (e.g. object-oriented code, continuous integration, unit testing)
- Experience with AI and machine learning techniques (e.g. statistics, clustering, classification, anomaly detection, embeddings, LLM usage)
